sonny 107.1

Sunny 107.1 is WRRQ-HD3.

Speaking of WRRQ HD, it appears that the analog and HD1 audio is out of sync. While driving down the Vestal Parkway, where WRRQ's signal is weak, the music jumps back and forth in the song, as the receiver blends back and forth between HD and analog. Not only that, but the HD is much quieter than the analog.

By comparison, WSKG has the HD and analog perfectly in sync and at nearly the same levels.

WRRQ HD also is not sending any text to the receivers.

While I don't have personal experience with HD, the audio level difference is understandable since analog FM is typically processed for maximum loudness with commercial formats. You may be hearing more aggressive processing on the FM side than on the HD, which is likely less processed in order to benefit from the HD audio quality.

WSKG and WSQX have formats that use almost NO audible processing, even on the FM side. (I even have to adjust the volume control in the car due to ANNOYING level differences during NPR broadcasts!) so in this case it would be just a matter of matching levels between the analog and digital signals.

As far as the sync issue, I know that analog signals are typically delayed to 'match' the HD signal, but I would think that there could be digital processing delays that are different inside different HD recievers.

Re: HD Sync (was sonny 107.1)

From what I've observed, WRRQ isn't delaying their analog signal at all. I've observed the analog audio being louder than the HD audio, and on other occasions, the opposite, where the HD is louder than the analog. I'm sure with time, they'll get it worked out. It is unfortunate, however, for those who have car radios that can't be locked to analog only mode, as the station becomes unlistenable for them.

WRRQ isn't alone with the sync issue. WYXL is the same way.
