Sonny Laguna

Does anybody know where Sonny Laguna is? He did mornings at KTXI/KTXF in Brownsville for many years. I believe the station was owned by Harvey Tate at the time. Great talent and a good guy. Kenny Garcia was at the station around the same time.

Sonny suffered a mild stroke back in the mid-1990's, which slightly affected his speech. He briefly came out of retirement about 5 years ago and returned to his morning position on KTEX (co-hosting with Patches), but it didn't last long. Don't know what happened to him after that.

I remember when I moved to the RGV in 1990, KTEX was pulling incredible numbers (over a 20) when guys like Sonny, Kenny and Frankie (who still does mid-mornings) ruled the airwaves!

Yeah I look at my Patches and the Goon coffie mug sometimes and wonder whatever happened to him?
Your right he did come back 6 years ago. But any of you remember how his came back came about?
Lets rewind our minds to August 1?, 1999.…..
It was a typical morning at KTEX, Patches and Jane O’Lexy in the morning, things were goin well until their computer messed up. Patches mentioned Garth Brooks-”Shameless” then the computer played some classic song from the 70’s. Next song he mentioned was a Tracy Lawrence song, it then played a classic country song. It kept doing that a few times throughout the day. And then a mysterious computerized voice came on the air. The DJ’s kept asking who it was, the voice would never say. He kept coming on every so often for the next few days, soon to be a week and a half. Never mentioning his name but his statements always referred to playing more classic country. That’s how it was for the next week and a half. This scary, freaky, computerized voice on the radio. KTEX was hacked! They could play nothing but classic country 24/7. The mysterious voice came on every now and then saying he liked what he heard, but never mentioned his name. He’d hang up and the DJ’s would be left asking what the heck was this? Classic Country was played for about a whole week. It was then on Monday August 23, 1999, 7AM the RGV was feeling the wrath of Hurricane Bret. The mysterious man’s name would finally be revealed. The computer hacker was Sunny Laguna, he complained that he never heard any old songs on the radio it was all this new country stuff, KTEX then settled for playing more classic country now and then. And stated that Sunny would come back to KTEX soon.

Sunny then came back to KTEX in the spring of 2000 to do mornings with Patches at KTEX. He would come in about 6:30am every morning, play his famous “Goon Toon” and then his classic country trivia, and then out by around 9am. He then left the Rio Trio in early 2001. No one knows where he went….

Ah the good old days of KTEX. I sure do miss them. Patches and Frankie D are still what keep the station going strong. Props up to them and all else at KTEX!

(please excuse my paragraph structure and how the sentences are arranged I’m not an Ace in English! LOL!)

Thanks for the information. It saddens me to hear about Sonny's stroke. I hope he's well and happy wherever he is now. I worked with him in the early '80s and he was a rare combination- a good jock, dedicated employee and decent human being. He always wanted to do it right and do it best. He took a lot of pride in that station.

His "return" to KTEX as you describe it, sounds like typical Sonny creativity and showmanship.

Yes, I remember the "computer hacking" stunt by KTEX. Pretty clever if you ask me. It even made headlines in the Valley Morning Star.
