Sonny Rollins, Jazz Musician

Sonny Rollins was a musical outlier. He might have been an example of Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 hours. He took time off for a few years in the early 1950s to practice. He'd walk along NY's Williamsburg Bridge, playing his saxophone all night. He wanted to get to the point where his playing was instinctual. He didn't have to think about it. He just played. It was the turning point in his career.

Modern/Alt Rock fans will remember Joe Jackson's Latin Jazz influenced 1984 album Body & Soul of which the cover was inspired by Sonny Rollins Volume 2.
