Sony, Panasonic verses no name brands.

Had one of those Sony shortwave radios with all the little buttons for about 20 years, it finally wore out. I think it was fairly expensive when I bought it.Did have good reception. I don’t like the digital displays generally.

I had posted elsewhere some 'mea culpa' disclaimer about the performance of AM portables for DX and, well, I gotta offer another qualified disclaimer here plus another question.
Disclaimer: I'm considered the worst of four DXers from Queens NYC near JFK Airport who -- each of us -- heard over 1500 different AM stations, 46 states, 10 provinces and numerous foreign MW stations during the late 60s and 70s, plus a few 89s.
So, my questions are: 'What is a DSP chip?' Do GE SR's have one? Did my old Lafayette HA 600 have one? And why are they bad? Is there one in my thermostat?
