SONY R300 Problem

I have a SONY R300 DAT recorder with a problem. I have been using it as a headphone amp by hitting the record button and leaving it the pause mode. I generally don't even insert a tape when I use it like this. I've always had full VU meter function and no operating problems... untill now. Now, I can still feed analog audio into the machine and hear it through the headphone jock, but I have lost all VU meter response and the machine will not record.However, it works without any problems when I use the digital input. I have full meter function and it records fine.I assume I've screwed something up by using it extensively in the pause/record mode but I could use some input as to what I may have done and how best (and inexpensivly) to repair it.
