Sony to stop selling physical PlayStation game discs in 2028
July 1, 2026 - Sony said the decision was rooted in consumer trends, where gamers prefer digital titles over physical media; the company offered no data to support this.
Note this affects the playstation discs thats ending and not playstation itself. Sony itself has focused on consumers that use digital downloads on their platform in recent years.
In a major announcement shared on Wednesday, July 1, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed that it will stop producing physical discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles beginning in January 2028, marking the end of an era for gamers who still prefer buying boxed copies.
After that date, all newly released PlayStation games will be available exclusively in digital formats through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers. Sony noted that the change will not affect games that have already been released or titles scheduled to launch on disc before January 2028.
"As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028," the company said in a statement.
