Sony Walkman AM antenna?

I have a sony walkman the model is SRF-M37V and can't figure out what is going on with the AM reception. I have looked at the ferrite antenna bar. it does not look like any damage is done or the bar its self broken . It's real difficult to get to the connections where it connects to the radio board due to the set up with where the battery compartment is. Any suggestions ? If I need to replace the AM bar antenna, how would I go about doing that. All the other bands come in great. I live in the Dallas Metroplex market and can only pick up KLIF 570, KSKY 660, WBAP 820 and KRLD 1080. Again any suggestions or tips are greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

You do know you can buy a brand new radio for only like $25, right?

You might try re-aligning by sliding the coil along the ferrite bar. This usually helps low end stations the most, but a severe misalignment could make for weak reception up and down the band. The position of the coil is really sensitive. A typical Sony walkman should have no trouble getting KLBJ 590 from Austin in the Metroplex.

Once you get the low end adjusted, adjust the trimmer cap for the antenna. You should have your reception restored.

Replacing an entire ferrite bar antenna is possible - since you are in the Metroplex you could look at Tanner electronics to see if they have any. The last time I was there the ferrite bar antennas were probably too big to fit in a walkman - but was perfect for my TM-152.

Also - put in the largest slug of ferrite you can fit in the coil and case. That always helps.
Edited by Bruce Carter on 09/08/05 08:21 PM.

LIKE for $25 you get nothing. Get a Sony SRF M85V. It's right around $50 list, and it replaces the 80. SUPERB AM! WAAAY better than the SRF M37 series which I have.
