Soul Seven Thirty

Sounds strange when they say that. It's been "Soul 73" since I was in grade school.

I'm hearing familiar voices on there (Dial-Global ones, I would guess) but wonder why Hyman wouldn't have taken on "Rejoice/Musical Soul Food" instead? There's several there who actually worked at KKDA over the years, plus having the benefit of having a REAL stick (albeit AM) for a progressive, adult-R&B-interlaced-with-modern-gospel format. I believe it appeared once over 990 or 700 back in 2008, but no one could hear it...and it kept getting pre-empted by paid programming.

But, for a mainstream listener like me (who doesn't want to hear "Strokin'," "Slip Away" and "Candy Licker" every 5 mins anymore,) the music mix is not too bad.

They should, however, consider a return to the ancient "Soul-Sockin' 73" moniker.

Which years did they use that ? My first recollection of "Soul 73 KKDA" is late 60's, maybe 1970. How far off is my memory ?

It seems to me KKDA became 'Soul Sockin' 73" in late 1971 or early 1972. I recall their high energy top 40 approach with 20/20 News when the station switched from an MOR music format. I loved the station; great talent and they played the hits.

730 was KPCN until January 1968 at which time it became KKDA/MOR "The Sunny Sound" with Studios at Beltline and Beatty roads in South Grand Prairie. Irene Runnels, previously of KBOX, was the GM for Owners Robert Strauss, Ben Barnes, Dee Kelley, Dick Gump and another attorney named Feld. It became Soul Sockin' 73 when management changed formats sometimes in 69 but I'm not exact of the date.. News Director was Bruce Hughes, PD=Tony Lawrence, Music Director=Bob Young formerly of KBOX-FM and CE was Russell Richardson.

The change on 5/1/70 was WBAP to 820, WFAA to 570 forever...

Yes, May 1, 1970 was also the day with the WBAP/WFAA time share came to an end. But it was also the day KKDA flipped to soul:

The KKDA calls were not requested by Republic Broadcasting until November 1968:

...and weren't officially granted until December 1968:

Thanx Huff! Then I stand corrected. I was one year off on my dates. Old age is catching up.

An older friend once told me that losing his memory was the 2nd worst thing that ever happened to him... When I ask what was the first he said he didn't remember... Funny or not, it's true...

I wonder if you are the same "Huff" who was with Susquehanna in the '90's?

Thanks Huff, unclepudd & bturner for the info. 1970, it was. That fits my recollections. I was grade school age, listening to radio several hours a day, at that point.

Maybe finally getting around to updating to "730" to correlate to the digital frequency display nowadays on most radios?

Sounds like Lynn Haze and Warren Brooks are VT'ing midday's and afternoons now.

Looks like they have a website up and running.

But they are not streaming the station yet. I tried to listen this morning.

Another milestone, as KKDA-AM started streaming today for the first time in their long history I believe.

They need to adjust the volume a bit, but it sounds great. I am digging it. Now I can listen to the Dear Crooner when I get to work.
