This week, Soul Train busted out with the Best of Soul Train.....They digged into the archives and showed an episode with Barry White (God rest his soul), Love Unlimited, The Temprees and Lola Falana....It was 1973 all over again!!!!! I saw on their website and next week they are going back to the 1975-76 season with musical guests War and the Main Ingredient (Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s dad's group). I know WGN is showing that at 11 am (CT). Let's break out the Afro Sheen Blowout kit (Yes, I HAD one) and give love to Don Cornelius (with the fro) and jump on the SOOOOOOOOUUUUUULLLLLLL TRAIN!!!!

This has got to be one of the longest-running syndicated shows. While it's good to see a show hold such longevity, in this new TV era I wonder how much gas is left in the proverbial tank before it parks in the garage for good.

If you do some research on Soul Train you can see some very interesting names that come up as guests in the first few seasons that were not having hits anymore: Little Richard, Jr. Walker & The Allstars, Wilson Pickett, Curtis Mayfield, Rufus Thomas, Jackie Wilson, the Dells, Four Tops, Jerry Butler, BB King, Gene Chandler, and Martha & the Vandellas all appeared on Season one. Major Lance, Hank Ballard, Archie Bell & The Drells, Lloyd Price, The Supremes, the Valentinos (group in which Bobby Womack scored with "I'm Looking For A Love" the first time in the early 60's before going solo). Little Anthony & The Imperials, and Chuck Berry stopped by during Season 2, And Eddie Floyd, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Smokey Robinson, The Fifth Dimension, Johnny Mathis (huh???), and Sly & The Family Stone went on the show in Season three.

Some other names that you will see and scratch your head a little are Herbie Hancock, José Feliciano, Elton John, Little Milton, Poison, The Average White Band, David Bowie, The Tymes, Dee Dee Sharp, Herb Alpert, Etta James, Cheech & Chong, and others

it's possible that that band or group is different from the rock band, And of course we are all familiar with wikipedia's flaws too.

I saw that old Soul Train re-run very early Sunday morning after an evening of "imbibing." I thought I was trippin'....it was indeed fun. Would be nice to see some more "Soooooooooooouuuuuuuul Train" repeats.......

Of course it was trippin'...maybe that's why the Soul Train is, as they put it, "the hippest trip in America."

Can you say, "DVD sales"?

I have to agree with you that it's good to see a show last so long in first-run syndication, I feel Soul Train hasn't been relevant since the '80s (when "It's Showtime at the Apollo" entered syndication), and much more so since Don Cornelius gave up his hosting duties.

Even though production is much better than when it was independently produced and syndicated, "Apollo" seems not to be as good as it once was. Whoopi Goldberg was not the best choice to replace Mo'Nique either.

As for DVD sales of classic episodes, I don't think it's logistically possible due to music licensing issues.

Saw this week's episode....from 19756-76 season-War and the Main Ingredient. Showed the first video on the show (War's "Why Can't We Be Friends"). Funny and smart. War performed on the show "Southern Part of Texas", a live version of "Low Rider" and the Main Ingredient performed "Shame On The World" and "Let Me Prove My Love To You".
Next week, we go into the '80's with Patti LaBelle and The Time.
