Soul Train's clearance in the '70s and '80s

Well, Soul Train never aired in Portland (Oregon) until KWBP-TV (now KRCW-TV) went on the air in the mid 1990s. As an African-American, my family (especially my late Father) had to watch the show on cable (WGN-TV)!

When I came back to California in 1988, our family used to catch the 9am PT (11am CT) showing on WGN, instead of waiting two hours later for it air on KTTV. KTTV lost Soul Train to KTLA around 1991, but kept it its same 11am timeslot, until most of the other Tribune stations started to move it later in the day, mostly due to the Kids WB lineup.

Did WKBS-TV 48 in Philadelphia aired this show for much of the 70 and into the early 80's? It currently airs on WPHL-TV Sunday mornings at 3 AM EDT.

Soul Train in Fairbanks, Alaska

Remember what I said about Soul Train not being on in Anchorage and Fairbanks in the '70s and '80s? Well, WGN would be added to the Fairbanks cable lineup in late 1981 (along with USA Network and MTV). Boy, I could imagine what we were thinking while boring ourselves during "Solid Gold" on Channel 2: "That's it; we're gonna get us some cable so we could watch some MTV, Bozo the Clown, and SOOOOOOOOOOUUUUULLLLLLLLL TRAIN!!!!!" I'm thinking WGN carried Soul Train not long after they went national in 1978.

On the broadcast side, KFXF Fox 7 started running the show in 1992 after they signed on.

But what about in international areas? I know reruns have been shown in Japan and there were loads of clips from them on YouTube until they all got the "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Don Cornelius Productions" message in that red box and lettering; they reside on Dailymotion now. I'm sure Soul Train was also syndicated to Australia or a few European/African countries at some point.

Soul Train never aired in Canada. If it wasn't aired in Seattle, why would it be on here? I was often mystified by the comments about it on some sitcoms in the 70's. American Bandstand on the other hand was a favorite of mine. I was shocked when I saw Jet Magazine for the first time. Black people in advertisements?

I remember growing up when I would visit family in Wichita,KS, Soul Train was carried on KAKE Ch. 10 (ABC) in the mid 1970's Friday Night/Saturday Morning at Midnight, then they dropped in the late 70's. Then KAKE picked up the show again for a season in the mid 80's.

Surprisingly Soul Train came on the Wichita airwaves around the early to mid 90's on low power TV station KCTU Ch. 55 (Now on Ch. 5 as an ION affiliate) and it was aired earlier in the day on Saturday at 5pm and I believe it moved to Sunday at 1pm. In early 2000 it moved over to former UPN affiliate KSCC Ch. 36 (Now My Network TV KMTW) and for a season on it's Fox sister station KSAS Ch. 24. Now it's back on Saturdays at 10pm on crosstown LPTV station KGPT Ch. 49. Their site is www.kgpt49.com

Also in Tulsa, Soul Train was carried ABC affiliate KTUL Ch. 8 in the 70's and early part of the 80's. It came on after American Bandstand on Saturday and later moved to late nights at 1am. KTUL dropped the show then KOKI Ch. 23 picked it up and carried it Friday night/Saturday morning at 1am for a couple of years, then moved over to KGCT Ch. 41 (Now My Network TV KMYT). Soul Train was off the airwaves in Tulsa when KGCT went dark in the late 80's-part of the early 90's due to an ice storm that hit Tulsa back then knocking quite a few stations off the air including Ch. 41. When 41 came back on the air as KTFO, Soul Train was added back on the schedule, not sure what time it was aired. When Clear Channel bought out KTFO and paired it with KOKI, Soul Train continued to air for a few years then it was dropped somewhere in the mid to late 90's and no station in Tulsa has picked up Soul Train.
