Sound Quality,,, Taking a hit

IM noticing the sound quality, and stereo seperation are pretty bad on some channels today. However, some channels sound better today, than usual. For instance, U-pop has almost true stereo seperation today, While Channel 80 The Move, is almost in complete Mono, with very minimal occasional seperation, and The System, Channel 82 which is usually one of the best sounding stations, seems to have suffered from about a 30-50% Bitrate drop. Also, Channel 81 BPM, has notable seperation, but it sounds like a dragging cassette tape, with Hiss noise, and very little treble, and muffled bass. And the new Channel 68 THE HEAT is in Mono, and has constant notable artifacts, and lisp everytime they use s. I hope they sort out these sound qualty issues soon, but anyone with ears can tell, that xm doesnt sound the same, as it did a few weeks ago, and the sound has changed once again, notable yesterday and today....

The sound changed a month or 2 ago...they cleaned up the muddy bass and seems like they changed the algorithm. The frequencies are still missing, but they're making a better attempt at hididng it.
______________

Forgot Lucy.

Although I am not a big listiner Lucy has the worst sound quality. Almost little stereo seperaton and a muddy sound.

The Dance stations sound fine now. They sound like the Latin stations. Could be that you were listing to a mix show on The Move that was in mono or porly encoded.

What I don't understand is that the Lifestyle and Jazz stations have the best sound quality but they are the least popular. All the music stations should have the same sound quality and be at the same bit rate.

I might add that The Move plays a lot of speciality shows and sometimes the original audio source can be a bit dodgy.

I listen to XM in a Nissan Maxima and it seems the quality is less than the Roady. I should plug my studio monitor headphones into the line out of the Roady to check out the quality again.
______________

I think your right about The Move Ch 80, it seems to be a bt better now,,, Nothing superior,, but the SQ went back to normal after FUBDAMENTAL--Mix Show ended. The system seems to have some fidelity back, but not what they were...BPM still sounds pretty much the same as usual now... The TECHs at XM are definatly tweaking today. Probably to accomodate the new channels, and less bandwidth.

Jazz and lifestyle?

Really? Do you have solid evidence of that? Watercolors is probably my main preset. Smooth Jazz is a viable commercial terrestrial format underrepresented in most markets. It's one of the main reasons I signed on. Hear Music is on the lifestyle section. Are you saying that also has lower listenership?

I always thought the popular channels (Lucy, 90's, 20 on 20, Mix, Top Tracks, et al.) sounded better then the obscure (The Loft, Fred, Audio Visions, Frank's Place, et al.). It's been awhile since I've compared channels, but I'll wait until the techs balance the sound out.

And I'm a fan of 'Real Jazz', 'Hear Music', and 'Frank's Place' and would preset all three if I wasn't that lazy... ;)

Sad, but true

As someone mentioned in an earlier thread, the online streams acutally sound better in most cases. I know in the past some have complained about the less than spectacular 64K bit rate, but the music channels still sound way better than they do on my My Fi or Sky Fi. At least they have good stereo separation and plenty of highs. At this point, I mainly use the online feed or better yet, the DirectTV feed, for listening to the music channels at home.

Re: You're paying for that nonsense, ENJOY!

Plenty of great FREE radio out there! As long as I live, I will never, (EVER) understand why anyone would pay for radio?? I guess its true! Theres a sucker born every minute. WAKE UP!

Tell me about this "great" free radio. How many commericials are played? How many different formats are there? Can I hear the songs the way the artist made them or are they censored/radio edits?

Re: You're paying for that nonsense, ENJOY!

I hear tell that some people say that they are
going to put out TV on a cable and get other
people to pay for it. Can you imagine??!! Why
would anyone pay for television when you can get
it free right off the air? Next thing yuh know
someone is going to bottle water and sell it to
people too.

Don't even question that above post. He's the type that has paid for bottled water and has cable TV. And he'll be the last to complain about 3.00 a gallon gasoline. Why?, you know and see people like that already. Ask somebody who is drinking bottled water if they have cable TV, then ask if they have satellite radio.
They'll eithier say no, or what is that?

The sucker in him is that he think's conventional or terrestrial is identical with satellite without the commercials. Or, he's just looking for attention.

How do you know it was a 30%-50% drop in "bitrate"? How do you know it wasn't 25% or 15% or an increase in bitrate? How do you know its not the stereo that you are playing your XM on that is the source of the quality issues?

What's with the attack mode? He has cable...you don't. So what?
It's your choice. It's his choice. By your 'logic'...why in the
world are you sending messages via computer when a good ole envelope
and stamp are good enough? Don't choose XM or cable? Fine...but
you sound like a small child complaining that their sibling got a
bigger piece of cake. I won't even start with the bottled water.
BTW...I've been in radio for 30+ years...and enjoy my XM and terrestrial.
______________
but wait...there's more!

Only Morons Make Those Comments

Speaking of waking up, you should practice what you preach. Or are you up, but have your head UP your ass?? Morons like you who make comments like this simply do NOT get it. So, because you're lack of intelligence is blinding, I'll tell you.

It's not about "radio" they are paying for.

It's about content.

Glad I was able to educate you, Beavis.

Or terrified about losing his job and trying to "woogy boogy" scare us back to terrestrial.

What attack mode? I made a comment on a post. I thought it was a childest post.
So the bottom line is, that must have been your kid that made the post.
