Source-connect rip-off

A couple of months ago I shelled out $695.00 for source connect, and everything was OK, until my ilok was lost/stolen...now source-elements tells me I have to BUY another license at another $695.00...an amount I cannot afford...so to recap, source elements has my $695.00, I have NOTHING

Just thought I'd let you know what these people are like..

Wow..for real?

That. Is unacceptable. Can you just get another ilok and transfer your license to it? That way if somebody should attempt to use that ilok..it would be on an ilock that won't work.

There must be a way for that to work..I stand to lose the physical ilok almost everyday.

Let me check further.

I spoke with them, and kinda got things straightened out..but take it from me DO NOT LOSE YOUR I-LOK!!

I talked with them at length..and they seemed readt to help out. In essence the iLok holds your license to use Source Connect. In my discussions with them it is a piece of hardware that needs to be insured..just like many of us insure our software in case it gets stolen or lost or damaged..my business insurance will cover such loss.

My comment was this..if you lose your car key..you do not have to buy a whole new car..you can purchase a new key. (and believe me some of the new keys are quite expensive to replace) That is what Source Elements/Source Connect is doing. The iLok IS the key..However iLok does not contain any discernible information regarding exactly what licenses it holds. You need to have a user name and a password to get information about the ilok account at ilok.com, and you also have to have a user name and password in place when logging on to source connect..so after all of those security measures we are still "out" if that dongle gets lost. If the iLok is damaged..they (ilok) will replace the physical key and you can load your existing license on it. If it is indeed stolen or misplaced..Souce Connect wants to protect themselves against users "saying that it is lost" in order to use it on two machines at once etc..or give one to another person etc..I can understand that fear..however again they state that if it is truly "gone" they will delete the current license and
reinstate a new license for a fee. That seems to be reasonable..also if it is stolen, you can file a claim on your insurance and get that money back.

Overall I understand the company wanting to be sure that everyone using their product pays for the privilege, and they seem to have a reasonable replacement cost for the product.

Well, I'm still not happy about having to spend the extra $$ (who would be?) but if you do any browsing at Pirate bay, or any other torrent site, you can better understand the plight of the software manufacturer..many of them are getting ripped off every day..Source connect IS a great product, and aside from this incident, their support has been first-rate...I've learned a very expensive lesson
