Source: Merlin To Flip WRXP To News/Talk

It's going to have to be a very different type of talk than you get from WABC, WOR or WNYM--or even from WWRL. It'll have to be funnier, less partisan, less doctrinaire and far more entertaining, kind of like the satirical shows you get from Comedy Central and HBO. The personalities will have to be bright, witty and engaging, to appeal to the younger listener who has a brain but not the inclination to show up with Grandpa at the next Tea Party rally. They might not be people you've heard before in New York radio and that could even work to their advantage. Great personalities catch on fast. Who knew Dan Ingram on Memorial Day of 1961? A year later everyone knew him and liked him...

Randy Michaels is a creative programmer so if anyone with the experience, resources and background to build a big market operation can do it, he can. It'll be interesting to see what he comes up with.

Of course, he could fool everyone by filling the other gaping hole in the tri-state area's format menu by making WRXP the area's only full market personality-driven modern country outlet. That would be the easiest way (although initially a tougher sell to the agencies).

This COULD be the most interesting thing to happen in radio in this state in quite a while...

I love/i] WRXP's current rock format - it's pretty much the only FM station I listen to when in NYC -- the rest of my time spent listening is to mostly the AM band (yes I'm under 50 and I love AM). Now, that being said I'm also a big fan of news/sports talk stations; so if this is true, this should be very interesting and I'll make sure to tune in whenever I'm in the city.

NOW 92.3 has been a fun experiment but i think its time to flip 92.3 back to rock if RXP flips to news/talk

WXRK is NOW FM and WXRP is Rock, I think someone got this mixed up.

92.3 Now (flipped that) may actually have something if the station continues to go on an uptempo CHR slant. As it is, dance/rhythmic is on the rise (a lot of Top 40 music has dance elements in it as of late). I said this on another thread but I would like to see that element of rhythmic interspersed with core dance elements (a la Sylvia Tosun, Jes, Kim Sozzi, etc.) along with the rising electronic DJ culture (David Guetta, Bob Sinclar, Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, etc.) and that could be something....if not for 92.3 Now, then definitely for 101.9.

Rock really hasn't had a revolution since grunge. Not "hating" on rock, mind you...just looking back to all of the negative comments about 'RXP.

Now, one source is speculating that, upon acquisition, WRXP will flip to a news/talk, if not an FM talk, format.

All I gotta say is...look at the "Free FM" era. ::)

See also: the aforementioned Free FM...

@WGLI: Wasn't it Joel Hollander that signed off on the big "Free FM" idea, and not so much Chernoff?

is it reported on another thread that WRXP is Planning Its 1st Multi-Stage Rock Festival on September 16, does this mean News Talk won't before this date if approved ?

Free FM had one thing Randy Michaels is lucky he doesn't have. Mark Chernoff.

I don't think Free FM had Chernoff. 92.3 FM in NYC had John Mainelli (the man who catapulted WABC into #1 in the early/mid 90s - only to leave and have his work undone by Disney and Phil Boyce).

Why John wasn't allowed to work his magic on 92.3 FM is probably something that we'll have to ask Joel Hollander, an evil worse than any Chernoff.

And a listener's suggestion to the new administrators of WRXP: If you plan on flipping the thing to talk, please don't make the same mistake of giving Leslie "The Radio Chick" Gold a time slot.

She flopped on FM-Talk 102.7 and she flopped on Free-FM. She's so yesterday's news. :p

I read in another story that Walter Sabo will be in charge of NYC. Sabo was the intial consultant for WTKS in Orlando and KLSX in Los Angeles. And with Randy Michaels in charge, I would look for a free spirited, non partisan, FM Talk station along the lines of those two stations. Kinda like a 24-hour beer commercial.

Of course, Sabo was also the consultant for New Jersey 101.5, as the poster "MedianJ" (Sabo himself?) won't let you forget.

This is pretty shocking news, considering the ratings increases and the upcoming "TakLiberty" festival. Maybe "TakLiberty" is the name of the upcoming new station? Guess that will serve as more of a farewell show. In retrospect, I suppose adding Loveline was a sign of things to come.

Interestingly, I've noticed in the last couple days that WRXP seems to be opening up their gold library a little more. Nothing drastic, but it seems like every few hours they'll play something I haven't heard on the radio in a while. Maybe we can expect more of that now that the end is near.

Makes no sense I think. Maybe they descide to stream WRXP or put it on HD a little longer until september 16 or longer. So 101.9 can flip earlier to talk or whatever the plans are.

I don't know where you read this, but Liz Aiello has been appointed VP/New York operations according to All Access. Aiello used to work for Howard 100 News on Sirius, then left to become SVP/Broadcast for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. I'd say that's definitely a sign that WRXP is headed for a talk format.

No word on FCC approval, but Merlin's LMA happens in 45 days. No word on what they do then, keep running RXP as-is or immediately flip.

Free Fm failed in every market, even markets that now have a successful FM talk station.

New York won't have an alternative rock station after WRXP flips.

I am mistaken, Sabo was mentioned as OM in Chicago, not New York (source: Tom Taylor's Afternoon Update/Radio Info).

Still, what with the url applications for both cities and Sabo on board, looks like FM Talk from here.
