Source of quality pushbutton switches

Hello All--

I'm adding a few pushbutton switches for a studio talkback system. I would like to add switches that have the following qualities:

N.O. contacts, momentary
Rectangular shape
LED illuminated when circuit closes
Various lens colors
smooth travel, "soft" push

Could you please recommend a few quality brands that you've had good luck with.

Also, in the past, I've noticed some switch lens that have names or functions stamped directly on them--such as "Studio B" or "Start Record." It appears that the manufacturer custom stamped names requested by the station. Do you know who does this?

And, as always, thanks in advance for all input.....

The only switches I know of in that range are either dialco or dialight.

I think both are still being made.

The engraving into the switch caps can be done by almost
any competent engraver, and then they fill the engraving with paint so it stands out.

Some engravers advertise this as a specialty service. Check with your local store.

These switches have been used in many well known on-air desks for years, and have good
reliability records. Most use the 'T' series of bi-pin lamps, but you can get an LED replacement
for the incandescent version which tends to die on a regular basis.

If you can find any NOS Clare Pendar switches, these would probably come closest to what you've described. They're now made by EMC, but probably quite expensive if purchased new:

Grass Valley began using them in video switchers back in the '70s. They are very durable and reliable, with stainless plungers and aluminum bodies. I've bought hundreds over the years at hamfest flea markets, often paying around ten cents each. Colored lens caps are available that can be fitted with a transparent label.

We used to refer to Clare switches as "missle launching switches," at least the ones that are military spec.
Super-reliable. Virtually DJ-proof, and that's saying something!

NKK also makes similar switches. Not quite in the same league, except possibly for price. ;)

Kind Regards,
David

Look up Veetronix.

This consist of a read relay capsule minus the coild, and a moving magnet. Total sealed, and since the contacts are not moved by the button directly you can get to choose how much pressure it take to press them.

A variety of contact arrangements are possible (I needed momentary 1 SPST NO and 1 SPST NC).

A wide variety of button caps are available including a clear cap that can take a legend.

They snap into your hole punched in metal.

As I recall you can buy them in quantities of as few as about 10 pieces.

I have sold product using these switches that has gone to africa and used in the worst conditions and never had one fail.

About the ONLY down side is that you need about 1.15" space behind the panel.

You might also check their competitor which is George Risk Industries.

Good luck.

Folks-

Thanks for all your suggestions--I'll check them out. I've also located IDEC (series A6) and Electro-Mech. Both look promising...

Thanks again....

If you have a Grainger Industrial Supply in your area, you might want to check with them.

Saw some of the Electro-Mechs in Fargo this past week at a surplus...I know I have some around here, but I'm still tempted.
The remote color control consoles Harris (same Harris ) built for the web printing presses used these buttons, and for 15 years I
was "Telecolor Tommy". I saw pressmen beat the snot out of them and clean 'em with solvents.
They're good but I've seen failures after millions of operations......
They can be beaten to death in a sustained fit of rage, as when the problem is elsewhere but the users
torture the poor button.

Anyway, Harrris bought Radiation Inc in Melbourne, FL who made missile control and communications systems before that.
That's why they really are missile launch buttons.

The reed relay truly is a better switch, I think. As long is it's built into a rugged body that will also last "forever".
