South 107 suspends Moby in the Morning

This morning Moby had a hot mic and said "GD" on the air. South 107 has suspended the syndication indefinitely and afternoon drive host Kevin Daniels will be handling mornings. The GM went on this afternoon saying it is up the listeners if they want to keep Moby.

According to the station's Facebook account, they're going to put up a poll on their website as to whether or not they should keep Moby, then "after the voting period ends, we will make your voices heard to upper management."

I sincerely hope this is part of a stunt because if they're actually hanging this guy's career at their radio station on a website poll, that's the height of unprofessionalism.

Have you ever really listened to Moby??? With all the entertaining elements he has going on there's always the chance of a mistake happening. I agree..using a listener poll to decide a legend's career is truly unprofessional. The stations that carry "your old pal, Mr. Moby" do not have the talent at their station to be able to do what Moby does. Without him there will be a giant hole at the station.

BTW, has any other of Moby's stations threaten to "suspend" him?

Didn't South 107 already dump Moby once, and then brought him back pretty quickly?

What is the status of WTSH's CP? It was contingent on the 107.5 move from Perimeter to Norcross and that's now done...

If I wanted to be a conspiracy theorist I could say this could be the first step in getting rid of the show "for cause" as part of a format flip to celebrate their new, bigger, closer-to-town signal.

Here's what Moby wrote on his show's Facebook page earlier today:

"If there's good news inall this, it would seem I don't need to come up with a fresh Facebook post for this morning. Huh? :) [I'm guessing South 107 management pressed him to be more active on Facbeook during his show? Why else would he throw this in?] I plan on having a good show. I hope that South 107 reconsiders their decision, and gets the Moby Show back on their station very quickly. Yeah baby, MOBY."

Rodney Ho has a write-up on this, including a statement from South 107's GM ("Whether intentionally aired or by accident the statement made Monday morning violated your trust and subjected our audience to completely inappropriate language...") and a convenient reminder of his "short, ill-fated stint at Z93":

Don't feel bad, Moby... I'm sure Michael Savage empathizes with you. :p

I read the headline of this thread and thought "Are they talking about the bald, vegetarian techno artist?" ;D

South 107 could make lemonade out of lemons--if they bring Moby back, they could have some kind of contest, promo, remote, and/or fundraiser to wash Moby's mouth out with soap. Everybody wins, and I even think Moby would appreciate it in principle, if not the actual process.

Food for thought: Rodney Ho points out that Moby still currently airs on about a half-dozen other stations, including the aforementioned WNGC, and stations as far as Monroe, Louisiana. Have these affiliates received similar complaints, and/or have their GM's taken listeners' temperature as to if they were offended or not? You'd think if it were so taboo, the entire show would be off the air for awhile.

But if I might add this: Moby is the most religious-respecting radio personality I know. He does a "daily hymn" every morning at around 6:20 AM, right after the Pledge of Allegiance is said by a child.

Well H E double hockey sticks. I think South 107 just wants rid of Moby. This is just a way to wiggle out of a contract. Granted Moby screwed up but at least he didn't say booger! Didn't Tom Reagan channel 2 F bomb on a remote.

One time Boortz said sugar-honey-iced-tea on the air and Cox didn't so much as blink.

The first hour of today's show has been brilliant. Before playing the first song of the hour, Moby went on about how he wasn't going to go on Facebook all day today. "Tired of that crap - oh, no, he said the 'C' word..." Later, he aired a listener call saying "regardless of what's going on with [bleep], I'm still listening." So now the name "South 107" is apparently one of the words you can't say on the radio now... Oh, and just after that call, they played Toby Keith's "American Ride" which has the term "hot damn" toward the end of the lyrics...

My, how times change.  It used to be that you could play "Money" by Pink Floyd or "Who Are You" by the Who uncensored.  Now both of those songs are edited.  A CC station in another market cut a word for "cat" that starts with "p" out of the Ted Nugent song "Cat Scratch Fever"--first time I ever heard that done (and I had to edit this post because RI doesn't like it either).

Although River is now playing the full, uncensored, album length version of Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side", the version that talks about someone not losing their head.  Hadn't heard that version on the radio in a while.

One thing that's interesting is how edits change over time.  Charlie Daniels' "Uneasy Rider" used to have the "asses" bleeped, now that passes but the word that rhymes with "flag" ("long-haired, hippie-type, pinko...") gets cut.

It is a PC thing.

@Jabba: As long as we're talking about country radio and edits and you're bringing Clear Channel into it, have you ever heard their edit of Gretchen Wilson's "Here For The Party"? The pre-chorus verse includng a line referring to "b---bustin' men" is replaced by the second pre-chorus verse ("bring on them cowboys and their pickup lines"). Ugh!

FYI: There's also a fun little thread about radio edits on the Dallas board... Have fun!

This morning, he opened by welcoming "90%" of the listening audience, and reminded co-host/music director/noted Atlanta radio legend Sandy Weaver "don't cuss." He's also starting to open up on the air more about his "faux pas." This is great radio - then again, I'm somewhat of a radio geek, so I always welcome talking "inside baseball". ;D

Moby just announced on the air that he will be back on South 107 starting Monday. This after I saw a post on Moby's Facebook page yesterday by a listener that South 107 would be making a decision on Moby's future on the station today. Don't know if South 107 announced this on their air already, as I have been listening to the WNGC stream... but I hope Moby didn't jump the gun on them by breaking the news!

Oh yeah... so much for giving listeners until next Thursday to make their feelings be known, huh? I understand they had to disable wall posts on their Facebook page at some point this week due to high listener feedback. The audience has spoken. (Yeah, baby!)
