I occasionally look through these postings, but don't take time to say anything. I have noticed some comments about WTBF in Troy. WTBF is now 5,000 watts, non-directional daytime and 45 watts, non-directional, nighttime. There is a new tower, that is shorter than the old ones, so it doesn't require lights. The location is the same. The three old towers have been dismantled. The new tower is where the old center tower was located.

WTBF and WAAO do not have the same engineer. The engineer at WTBF is a part-time announcer and production person for WAAO.

WAAO has studios in the old WCTA building. It was built in the early 60s for WCTA and WCTA-FM. WCTA-FM 98.1 was known as WNBX in the late 60s and early 70s,(WNBX had an early automation system with easy music) WQHQ (SMC automation system with AC music) in the mid to late 70s and WKYD-FM (country music)in the 80s. The FM became WWSF "The Surf" in the late 80s. FM 98.1 is now licensed to Holt, FL as WTKE, "The Ticket". The owners of WAAO-FM 103.7 bought the building and WKYD AM 920 in the 90s. WKYD 920 no longer exists. The new Wal-Mart Super Center is being built right next door.

And finally, yes, Florala still has a radio station. It is WKWL AM 1230.

Oops..sorry to get the facts wrong on that earlier post, re: 'driving through the country'. My apologies.

Apologies accepted. There was also a post concerning an AM stereo station in the Covington County area. That would be WOPP, 1290 in Opp. To my knowledge, WOPP has been the only AM stereo station in the immediate area.

There are some interesting things concerning AM stations in the area. In the 1980s, Andalusia had three AMs: WKYD 920, WAAO 1530 and WTCG 1400. During that time, Opp had WOPP 1290 and WAMI 860 and Florala had WKWL 1230.
Now, Andalusia has no AM stations, Opp has two and Florala has one.
