South Bend TV question

I know this is a TV question but is WNIT in South Bend off of the air? I have a cottage in Union Pier Mi. We opened it up this weekend. When I tuned to 34, I received nothing all weekend long. What gives?

Channel 34 will not be coming back. They're analog transmitter's output tube failed and they have elected not to replace it (replacement in the neighborhood of $75,000). As you are probably aware, in February 2009 they would have been required to shut down analog operation on channel 34. For some time now that have been "dualcasting" with digital operation on channel 35 (two channels). Since you are watching 'off-the-air' with an antenna (as opposed to cable) you will either need to purchase a new television capable of receiving digital channels ("ATSC tuner") or you will need to purchase a converter box. The box goes between your antenna and your existing set. The connections are similar to what you would encounter if you wanted to hook up a DVD player to your TV.

Hope this helps.

I also want to chime in with a reminder that you can order a government provided coupon (limit two) that will save you $40 off the cost of a Digital to Analog converter box for your old analog TV set. Just visit http://www.dtv2009.gov/ or call 1-888-DTV-2009.
