South Bend TV Stations Sold

According to WSBT-TV's website, Schurz/WSBT, Inc. signs an agreement with Weigel whereby WSBT, Inc. will purchase WBND (ABC), WCWW (CW), and WMYS (My). No price named.

If I were working at WSJV today, I would be more nervous than is normal for a Monday afternoon.

This was unexpected. I actually like CW25 and ABC57 and wonder what changes will be made. One thing I wonder is will this be the end of Bulls, Sox and Cubs broadcasts in South Bend?

Unless there's an exemption with LPTV stations, I thought Schurz couldn't buy the stations without having to sell off the South Bend Tribune. Schurz owned 101.5 WNSN, WSBT-TV & AM, and the South Bend Tribune prior to 1975, and could continue to own all of them. I would think that if they wanted to own the 3 LPTV stations, that they would be forced to sell the South Bend Tribune. I wish I knew the rules on this with LPTV stations and a newspaper. If it were another full power TV station, or even another radio station, then it would have forced Schurz to sell the South Bend Tribune, as cross-ownership isn't allowed under current rules.

If I remember correctly, LPTV's don't count toward ownership caps. So, I think Schurz is fine in South Bend. I know they have a similar in Springfield, MO with KYTV and K15CZ, and Springfield doesn't have enough total stations to allow duopoly. Schurz and competitor Nexstar also have a makeshift duopoly with KYTV (NBC) and KSPR (ABC) in shared services agreements while Nexstar and Mission have a shared services agreement between KOLR (CBS) and KSFX (Fox).

This likely signals the end of the 11pm newscast seen on WBND-ABC 57. If I'm not mistaken it's produced out of (soon to be ex)sister station WDJT in Milwaukee.
