South Carolina Radio Station Wish List

As summer is starting to fade and fall will soon be with us and the holiday season shortly after that times are still hard be at least most of us are all in it together. This thread is for a wish list of what anyone or everyone would like to see/hear changed or improved on our South Carolina radio stations no matter what it might be or how far out it might seem lets hear it.

I want AAA to return to Hilton Head. I miss Wave 104.9...

I want another alt. rocker to sign on in Charleston...

And I want to see more AM and HD-2 FM translators sign on. Hell, if the religious people can have hundreds of the things broadcasting the same format, why shouldn't we get more niche formats on FM (Miller has done this in Florence...Cumulus has done it in Atlanta)

And I want to see ETV Radio broaden their programming. HD-2 with the other format not running on the main FM signal, and maybe an HD-3 with world news programming or jazz.

Radio-X

In Greenville, I'd like to see Clear Channel try another format on WBZT. The station can do better, as evidenced in the past as The Buzzard. At this point I think anything would do better than a 0 share.

Also in Greenville, I'd like to see Entercom try some type of sports talk on 950/1330. Those are really a waste now with n/t on 106.3 and it would be a good idea I think (heck, better than female talk on an FM!).

I agree with that carolinaradio. Greenville is an underserved sports radio market, as the only stations in that area are WCCP (which is only strong west of Greenville, more of a Clemson station), and 1400 in Spartanburg (which in this area, doesn't get out more than 15-20 miles).

Charleston has three sports talk stations, all with local programming (910, 1390/99.3, 1450).

ETV should broaden their programming, but they get so little money from the state that they have dropped a lot of things. Everything is run out of Columbia on their TV and radio side, and their local programming is only average compared to what UNCTV and GPB put out.

For my area, I think that several things should be done: 95SX should go back to a regular top 40 format, drop Ryan Seacrest in the afternoons, and sound like what it was before B92 came. 96.9 should go become more of a hot country format, and give Steve Russell a better timeslot. The Bridge should go back to their local music roots, and play that a large part of the day. 102.5 should get some more live personalities, and 95.9 should get some local personalities to fill out all of their timeslots.

No matter how far out?

Fayetteville's Magic 106.9 should return to being WIOZ, circa 1989.

Myrtle Beach's Star 92.1 should go back to being Joy 92, circa 1981.

Myrtle Beach's WIQB should be a Dial Global standards station once again (actually, Westwood One still ran it back in WIQB's day). Oh, heck, put it on FM. That would be WJXY The Team.

WMUU should be heard all over the state on every AM station that can't make it.

Asheville's Kiss 99.9 should be like WLOS, circa 1980.

Charleston's 96.9 The Wolf should be like Ecstasy, circa 1977.

Hilton Head's WLOW should be back on 99.7 and the way it sounded in 1994. WRNN in Myrtle Beach should be off the air so I can hear WLOW there, with Rush back on 94.5.

WSIM in Florence should be Music of Your Life as it sounded when Wink Martindale, Gary Owens and Peter Marshall were still there.

WESC, 96.9 the Kat, and 106.5 The Coyote should be ABC Real Country.

And WOLS in Charlotte should be doing what WAVO is actually doing.

i agree that clear channel should do something else with wbzt. it sounds ok but a 0 rating is not good. i disagree with vchimpanzee that some of the stations should go satellite. after 2100 plus posts, he/she must be old and tired.

entercom should go local with the am stations one strong station should compete against wjmz steve harvey would do well here

I think Rock could be tried on WBZT again especially with sports. the Buzzard did ok given the signal. I'd like an AAA but that's far fetched.

I've long thought that another urban station would work. Look at the share WJMZ gets. But everybody seems happy where they are with the big signals, at least right now.

I would like to see a traditional radio week where most of the radio stations no matter how big or small in the state would have a back to radio for 7 days. Get some of the old DJ's, Programmers, station owners, ect... to give of their time for one week to remember radio the way it use to be. Make it a once a year event for one week only.

that would be interesting since there are no turntables, carts, or cd players in the studios anymore just a mouse and keyboard a radio nightmare we've all had where there was dead air and we couldn't get something on the air.

You don't think my ideas are too far-fetched?

If they weren't, satellite would be the way to go because they have such good music and great DJs. Although for classic country WIST in the Greensboro market, which has no DJs except on the morning show, sounds great musically. The station IDs are the best.

Ok why dosen't clear channel put up The Clear Channel Satellite Radio Network on a test format and take three or four of it's weakest stations rattings wise that play the same format and test the market for two quarters say 6 months and see what the ratings do in those areas. I guess they wouldn't have to worry about music selection per station then just one feed so long as they didn't overlap coverage areas to much.

I think by next year we will be seeing more stations using Premium Choice. Unlike satellite, the stations are apparently given it in a 'playlist' form as songs don't always fire off at the same time. WLYT and WMAG in NC overlap greatly but are always playing the same songs at the same time.

Wouldn't surprise me if WSSL, WEZL, and WCOS take advantage of the offerings for country soon. Maybe not all. Same for WXLY and WMYI for AC.

I would still like to see a one week out of the year real radio week where DJ's come in to help and give that audience connection and feel that is missing from most radio stations today. Make it sound like real radio for one week out of the year.

OK, no matter how far fetched? Lets go back to doing radio the way it used to be done. No, I'm not talking about going back to turntables, carts, and the big Gates snowplow consoles. Those days are gone forever. Computers make it so much easier. I'm talking about putting the ownership of stations back into the hands of local people, Moms and Pops who have a genuine interest in the local community and who want the station to be successful. Stations with live DJ's on the air 24 hours a day. Local news and community announcements. Local businesses that advertise on the station. Lets get the local high school football games back on the air. Has anybody listened to any of Art Sutton's stations lately? Perfect examples of community oriented programming and lots of local advertisers. As far as I know, his stations are very successful. Now the sad reality, the cost of acquiring or starting a station unfortunately has become so astronomical in recent years that it is well out of the reach of the people who IMHO can do radio best. So I guess we are stuck with the corporate "cookie cutter" stations forever.

I usually listen to WGOG-FM whne I am in the Rosman, NC area. I know that they have a morning show and the rest is a satellite feed from the ABC Country network and it really sounds great. I would not mind seeing New 92 doing something like this and we might even see this with WCOS in the not too distant future.

How about an Mainstream AC in Myrtle Beach?

Maybe 92.1 should shift? 94.5? 94.9? Seems 94.9 would do better as AC than a niche format like they have. Is it similar to 94.5?

94.5 was doing it. From the ratings I saw, it looked like it was doing fine. Maybe WEZV didn't want to lose listeners?

Actually, I think 92.1 IS mainstream AC, because some people are saying what the "soft rock" stations are doing is "soft AC". I picked up Star the other day and heard "Hey Jealousy" and "Everyday Is a Winding Road". I had forgotten I had a button set. I guess it's just curiosity. I need to see what WEZV's competition is.

I should get pancakes to go because I hate sitting in a restaurant that subjects us to this garbage. I wonder if they'd do that? But wait ... how would I take the syrup if it's a place that puts syrup in glass containers.

OK, here's another one. That Entercom would stop the "now on FM at 106.3" stuff with WORD. It's been on FM for 16 months. I think we get the picture now. ::)
