South Florida AM Radio Stations, Spring 1971

Nassau's gone Funky!

Not that I care much about South Florida in any way, shape, or form, but what happened to the Nassau Stations? And weren't you a guest D.J. in 1971?

Still there:
Nassau on 1240 and 1540 (1240 is religious.)
Freeport on 810

See ZNS Radio Bahamas.

There are also FM and TV stations in the Bahamas, but that's a different kind of DX.

> weren't you a guest D.J. in 1971?

Yes, as a nerdy college kid.
See Guest Deejay On WFUN.

Re your subject line, what's funky about Nassau?

Did you spot the typos?

Funky Nassau!

Where was WFUN in South Miami? Currently I live right off the Palmetto & Sunset.

About the Typo's. Could WBGS be one of them? We had a KGBS in Los Angeles owned by the same guy.

Off Sunset, between US1 and Palmetto. Probably one of
the old-timers who worked there could give you a
better answer.

Back then, only bears, alligators, mosquitos, panthers,
and Seminoles were living west of the Palmetto.

Kendall Drive was the road to nowhere.

Yes. It's WGBS! ("The 710 building on Brickell Avenue")

"Funky Nassau" by The Beginning Of The End.
Summer 1971, peaked at #15.

"Here's another one of those funkier than
thou songs..." --Lee Bayley, KAKC Tulsa,
on Bootleg Top 40 Volume 1.

Re: Nassau's gone Funky!

Well actually that was my subject line, and I can top that. I worked with Lee Bayley at Drake Chenault. You just replied to the wrong guy!

Having fun in 1971 at WFUN

Surely they played that one. Pull out the old Top 30 Charts, and let us know how it did in Miami?

I was guest deejay on WFUN in June.

Then I went back to listening to classical music on
WTMI and country on WWOK and WGMA. And M-O-R on WLOD
and WFTL. And talk on WKAT.

Sorry. Never heard of that song. REALLY!

WQAM jocks had a job action in July, 1971 and were all fired as Storz took one jock from each of their stations and sent them to Florida.

From memory:

Jim Dunlap (PD) AM Drive
Ronnie Grant-Midday
Todd Chase-PM Drive
Clark Moore-Evening
Steve Morgan-overnight

WFUN (incomplete)

Bob Gordon-AM Drive
(could have been Richard Ward Fatherly) or Michael Meyer Dineen?
Tom Kennington-Midday
Don Wright- PM Drive
Mike "E" Harvey Evening
Jack Daniels-Overnight

My favorite show was The Music Museum on Sunday night. I think it was hosted by newsman Paul Henderson.

WFUN
6101 Sunset Drive
South Miami

Transmitter was further south.

WGBS was at 710, also 710 Brickell Ave. A Storer station.

Re: WFUN 790

WFUN was near the University Of Miami and US 1. They were not out in the Everglades. Can I say, downtown South Miami? If there is such a thing.

Re: Nassau's gone Funky! #9 WFUN

No, Funky Nassau was #9 for the second week on June 5, 1971 on the WFUN Fun 40 Survey. See for yourself.

No 954 knows his directions, even in Miami Dade

I don't think 954 said WFUN was in the Everglades. In fact he made an astute observation that everything West of the Roadway was simply swamps, marshes, and the everglades. And yes their is a City of South Miami, City Hall is right where WFUN had to be!

I didn't say they were in the Everglades. Read my lips.

Thank you, MMM. I was going to explain that, but you said it better.

Do you remember a big deli called Marshall something, in
S. Miami (I think) in the 70s? Remember Yumbrella,
predecessor to today's food courts?

Thanks for the Survey, but in defense of the OldiesFan

he never said where it peaked at # 15. Let us remember all surveys are not the same!.

Billboard chart, courtesy Joel Whitburn.

WFUN

I think the subject was about WFUN airplay. WFUN Fun 40 is more relevant to that than a Billboard chart. Miami has often had its own preferences where songs have done much worse or much better and many local hits. Six months prior in August, 1970, Stoned Cowboy by Fantasy was #1 for two weeks (at least on WQAM).

In early 1971, Jungle Fever by Chakakas peaker around #3 in Miami, but was not very successful elsewhere.
