South Florida Radio Stations Summary

The stations of South Florida

91.3 Basic MPR station, lacks classical music, a big minus in a market devoid of such a format.

93.1 Very repetitive, needs to focus entirely on modern rock and avoid the same songs all the time.

96.5 Too urban, I wish they would go back to their CHR/URban roots of the early 90's and mix in some dance again.

97.3 Too slow. Why do they still think they are a hot ac station. They sound like a light ac station but will never be able to tople 101.5

97.9 Very good Hot AC station. Surprised they dont get better broward ratings.

99.1 Very good urban station and a good morning show

99.9 Good country station with a very good morning show. Not too sure how well they do when they play nascar.

100.7 Anyone remember the day as an adult top 40 station in the early 90's. Typical CHR/POP station. Fills the niche in the market.

101.5 Top ratings for the this light ac station.

102.7 Looking more like a classic hits station than an oldies station. Nice new sound.

103.5 Clear channels attack on 99 jams. Will not last. The old morning show was good. The new one is from New York and is horrible.

104.3 Decent Light AC station, signal is too far to attack light 101.5

105.1 Good urban ac, always at the top of the ratings.

105.9 sounding softer and softer. Not as hardcore classic rock station as it was 3 years ago. But their ratings keep going up, its either the music or Paul and Ron.

Any comments.

They've been gradually cutting out music for
years in favor of leftist NPR talk. Excellent
local interview programs (Joseph Cooper and Ed
Bell) from 1-2 PM weekdays. Jazz evenings and
Caribbean music overnight haven't been cut
out -- yet.

Much worse than it used to be, since they cut out
most of their pre-64 music a few years ago.
Now you need to listen to Jon Sommers on WJNA
(640) from 7 'til midnight for oldies.

Yes. Star and Buck suck.

The Coast is a very boring station in my opinion. Do they still do Totally 80s Weekend every weekend? That gets boring after a while.

Agreed, good station.

100.7 is doing its job. Like you said, fills a niche.

This is a great AC station. The presentation is good and it works well in South Florida.

Last time I listend which was July 2004, they still were playing pretty old music, obviously a lot has happend to oldies stations the past year.

I prefer Lite FM, but it serves the West Palm Beach area and surrounding places.

That is happening to the local classic rock station in my area. They are becoming a little softer adding more "classic hits", whatever the format. The station here is slightly moving away from the bad ass crazy attitude. Not surprised, since both stations are owned by CC. Nothing significant though.

Liking/not liking a radio statio is a personal thing. I now live in Jacksonville Fl since 1997, but for 20 years I lived in South Florida. Of all the radio stations I missed most when I left was Majic 102.7. It has changed but in order to survive/attract advertisers it had to update its' sound. I currently listen to 102.7 on the internet and it's about the best around.

All over the country, traditional oldies stations particularly on FM are dying. South Florida is very lucky to have Majic. The 60s/70s station we have in Jax can't be compared. It's almost all automated and there is little flow with the positioning of songs. Majic still has personality DJs even on the weekends and they have a consistancy in sound which is not always easy to do.

No station can keep everyone happy. But it does distress me when listeners abandon a format because they get a little PO'd. In many markets, overall ratings for oldies stations dropped because listeners did their little protest thing. Then they would loose the station entirely and wonder what happened.

Look, count your blessings you have a station like Majic that still plays more 60s than most other stations around the country. It may not be perfect in your eyes (or ears) but you have to give them credit for keeping it going for decades. They should be supported big time.

I've listened to 50s-only stations on the web
and some stations with no 70s.

Majic 102.7 has a wonderful personality.... Some of the
nicest people in local radio. Rick Shaw contributed an
article to South Florida Radio History. Mindy Lang is a
very nice. And so on.

It's what they've done to their playlsit I can't abide.

I stopped listening to R&R in about '65 'cause I didn't
like the direction it was going in. Most of what WMXJ plays
now is what made me switch to m-o-r 40 years ago. (Don't
worry. I also like classical, jazz, swing, Caribbean,
Irish, klezmer, 1920s, and country.) When I want to listen
to oldies now, I listen to my CDs or Jon Sommers on WJNA.

I still lesten to the "too-old" oldies show Majic dumped
a few years ago: Ken Held's Doo-Wop Shop. (Songs from when
I was too young to have a transistor radio.)

Only he's on WJNA (640) now.

Leave it to a liberal to confuse a liberal slant with
objectivity. But I'll be polite and won't reply with
"VERY IGNORANT OF YOU!"

This is the Miami board, not the Off-The-Air board.
Insults and politics are frowned upon here. (Just ask.)

And you didn't even mention our local NPR affiliate,
WLRN. Which was the reason for my posting.

Have you ever listened to WLRN's excellent Caribbean
music and jazz? How about Ed Bell? Or their new multicast HD classical station?

Or are you just an out-of-town apologist/publicist for NPR?

But read on...

I listen to NPR talk very little because of this.

It's a vast wasteland *WITH* the liberal-oriented
politically correct left-leaning NPR, too.

You must think you're Newton Minow. Believe me,

Re: WLRN and NPR

You two need to get a room, or something. Philly, calm down. Stop yelling. You're acting very un-NPR-like...954 is just trying to bait you, to stir some contrived controvery. NPR/WLRN does do a great job at news - NPR's long form programs like All Things Considered are outstanding, and the local news is competently presented by The Herald. I believe there is a bias, but it doesn't really bother me. I can filter it out and can form my own decisions.

But it's ironic this subject should come up tonight..I wanted to hear the latest on Rita and caught WIOD's news at 6. I can't believe what I was hearing...after what seemed like a regular newscast, the anchor leads into what they say is the first of a five part series on over-crowding in South Florida. It was like three minutes? It was well done and everything but who the hell does three minute produced pieces for COMMERCIAL radio news any more? In AFTERNOON DRIVE no less. Then they continue with their news hour with interviews with Weather Channel and a reporter live from Texas. I was extremely impressed to hear a radio station, other than NPR, still doing news series and extended news coverage in afternoon drive.

YOU work at WLRN?

Then you must be one of the people responsible
for syetematically destroying WLRN's excellent
local content to replace it with more and more
leftist NPR crap.

I enjoyed listening to WLRN's lunchtime jazz until
it was replaced with NPR talk shows in about '97.

I enjoyed listening to WLRN's Sounds Of The Caribbean
weekends, until it was replaced with BBC News a
few years ago.

I enjoyed listening to WLRN's Radio Reading Service
mornings, until they decided to take it off the
air so you can only hear it with a special receiver.

I've beena WLRN fan since they started playing Jazz
about 30 years ago, after the demise of WBUS.

With your nasty attitude, now I understand all the
changes.

Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.

NPR might have a basis for bias, but it provides a lot more information than most commercial outlets. Just like FOX or ABC, I take what I hear with a grain of salt and make my own decision based upon more than one source.

NPR's not shoving it down your throat, 954; they're presenting it to you and trying to make you REMEMBER they're presenting it to you, instead of well, shoving it down your throat.

Someone said it earlier: Be thankful public radio IS still around; more budget cuts and careless spending and it WILL be gone, never to come back.

If public broadcasting goes, there goes every decent education show for children, and 99% of commercial outlets won't touch them.

Adults, please remember the younger generations here now, and the next ones to follow after ours. We need something other than what's offered now more than ever, especially for the kids. It was there for us; the next generations need it even more.

I was merely expressing an opinion. Like everyone else.
That's what this board's designed for.

> presenting it to you, instead of well, shoving it down your

One could make an argument that, since it's presented on
a government-funded station (WLRN is owned by the school
board) they ARE shoving it down my throat. And the same
applies to NPR, which gets government funding.

What about your NPR "magazine" shows and talk shows
all day? That's not news. Diane Rehm? Talk of the
Nation? No more news there than on O'Reilly or
Ingraham.

Sez you.

You ever hear of the many stations that define
themselves as "listen at work"? That's what I did
with lunchtime jazz. Listened at work. A lot of people
listen to radio during the day and watch TV at night.
YOU must be aware of this. Better suited, humbug!

It was enjoyed by lot's more people than that.
And not all blind people have the special receiver.

Since when is my own opinion not allowed, and defined
as misinformation? Only by the politically correct left,
who can't abide a differing point of view. As Steve Kane said,
the left likes ethnic diversity but can't tolerate
diversity of opinion.

If you REALLY work at WLRN, I hope the station management
sees how you are dealing with listener comments amd
responds accordingly.

Any WLRN management people reading this board?

But I still think you'rew an impostor, and not a
WLRN employee.

In the custom that is spreading on this board:

Posting 997 dedicated to telling people that Florida
State Road 997 is the road that goes from US 27 (NW
of Hialeah, in the NW corner of inhabitable Miami-Dade
County) due south to Homestead. It used to be called
State Road 27. They probably changed it because people
got the two roads confused.

It's NOT government funded anymore...More than 85 percent
of funding comes from listeners and underwriters locally...The rest
is made up by NPR's own underwriting...

Whatever Dude...

Whether I work there or not (which I do) doesn't matter...

You've made your point, as have I...

To equate the Diane Rehm show and Talk of the Nation to idealogically conservative one-sided talk shows is clearly incorrect, and shows how little you know about NPR...

Listen a little bit, but try a little objectivity next time...

Really? That's good to know.

That's what I like about this board. Occasionally
you can learn something, if you can wade through
all the blather. That's why I liked Robert's
posts on the Branson thread.

But LRN is still owned and funded by the school
board, right?
