South Florida Simulcast

I wonder why they did that. Merlin doesn't own WFTL. And why choose FM News 101.9 instead of WCBS 880?

Perhaps WFTL is trying to get some listeners with ties to the NYC area who would otherwise watch CNN for hurricane coverage. And local residents interested to hear how we handle a "small" hurricane (by their standards) up north.

At night, WCBS 880 itself makes it down there.

No longer...WZAB Sweetwater "880 the Biz" has been around for a year or two.

As to WCBS vs 101.9, my reasoning would be that 101.9 is not owned by CBS, who own stations in the West Palm Beach market (hey---maybe 104.3 & 103.1 are running WCBS on an HD, I dunno).

It's been interesting listening, to say the least.

We heard something on New that annoys us.
We know that other radio and television news departments do this, it still annoys us.
Saying that a curfew will be enforced is news; telling people to stay off the streets at night is not news.
Saying that Mayor Bloomberg has asked residents in certain areas to evacuate is news; even suggesting that they leave is not.
Saying, "please, if you value your safety or the safety of your loved ones, please blah blah blah" is not reporting anything.
Oppinions and/or editorials have their places, not during reports.

WFTL should have simulcasted different news stations following the storm.

Such as WTOP, WBAL, KYW, WEMP, WTIC, WBZ as the eye passed through the respective markets. It's easy to pull up the web stream for all those stations and the owners would be flattered to find out that WFTL is simulcasting them. Any listener in the eastern half of the country could follow the storm till sunrise by tuning in to the different AM stations.

When Katrina hit, no one in the NYC market simulcasted a New Orleans station. It was interesting to hear local New Orleans AM stations at night that stayed on day power through the storm. There's just something different about a local station doing wall to wall local coverage of a storm than CNN doing national coverage of a storm and every other news story.

In this day and age, almost all the TV stations stream their news on the web during the storm.

WFTL is a crap ass station with no ratings yet has an amazing 50kw signal. Small owner that still thinks it's 1962. Just look at their crappy website.
Merlin is an independent owner, too, so it was probably easy to get the "ok" from them. Not so much from CBS.

For a website from 1962, it's pretty spiffy....albeit, ummm....a tad CROWDED..... ;)

You're right, our monitor shows it in monochrome!
Did you notice the adds for this car and that line of TV's?

WCBS-AM does make it down there most nights, but it's not a listenable local signal for most people.

The site sucks. There is NO local content produced by the station.
An ABC news crawl.
Local, National, sports, etc from Metro.
Accuweather widget.
Widget from a local newspaper.
Video widget from AP and CNN.
Wall Street Journal widget.
The rest of the stuff is crap about the local shows they have.

If you REALLY want a laugh, tune into the morning show tomorrow (Monday) from 6-9am.
The news people are good, although there is NO sound on any of the stories. But the hosts? OMG. Trust me. It's worth your time to tune in.
