South Madison Schools look to cut WEEM-FM program

South Madison Schools are proposing at a school board meeting tonight to eliminate the nearly 40 year old radio program. Story online at Herald-Bulletin.comhttp://www.heraldbulletin.com/archivesearch/local_story_013223934.html.

I, Jered Petrey, am the instructor and GM at WEEM. Along with me, considered to be cut is Assistant GM Chad Smith, 100 athletic broadcasts per year, 30+ current staff, 40 years of history and alumni, and one of the high school radio stations to have student on-air 24 hours a day (be it voicetracked and prerecorded).

I will keep the board posted on the news, and if you wish to help preserve this wonderful program, please join us tonight at the South Madison Community School Corporation school board meeting tonight.

Jared,

Best of luck defending your job. I suspect it won't be easy (since your positions aren't part of the "core curriculum"). I would probably go to the meeting if not for the fact that I'm not in the Indy metro.

Thanks for the support. We are in a massive campaign, some of you may end up getting emails, twitter posts or facebook posts from friends of friends of friends. Our students are distraught...some of them will be lost if they don't have this program. To them, it's like getting rid of basketball or football.

The thing that gets at me is the fact that they waited until the newspaper reported it to tell us. Insane.

Hi Jered,

I'm a PHHS grad living in Texas, and would be there tonight if I could. WEEM made a big difference for me, as I'm a long term employee of Emmis Communications. I'd be happy to write a blurb about WEEM setting the stage for its graduates success if you think it would help. Let me know how to contact you if I can help AT ALL.

WEEM has been on the air a long time and some decent broadcasters have come out of this station.
So, this is too bad!

One year ago, they could have sold this license to a Christian broadcaster for big bucks. But,
I doubt this is true today. Most of the stations in your county now are religious. So, the school
would have to dump it. This may be your saving grace. Few buyers today.

Perhaps you as the GM can come up with a plan for WEEM to support itself. Sell lots of underwriting
for those high school games. Go to the listeners for donations. Ask the board for some more time
to implement this. Good luck to you!!!!

hopefully you guys down at South Madison can take advantage of the people that are pissed up here in anderson about them closing highland and pick up a good chunk of HHS jumpers and boost the systems income a bit.

good luck hope you guys can find some way to keep things going down there. you got one of the few stations left in this county thats not a bible banger station

kd8hho. right now unless the south Madison school board overturns their stance on Allowing out of district transfers the SM School board put into affect last summer. ACS Students cant transfer into SM right now. but that is up for reconsideration at the same school board meeting that is also considering all the cuts including WEEM. right now the only outlets for ACS Students to bail to is Frankton Lapel, Elwood, Daleville, Alexandria, Yorktown and Private Christian Schools Like Liberty Christian, Anderson Christian Academey, Indiana Christian Academy, and Charter school Anderson Prep Academy.

hopefully SM choses to keep WEEM open and allow to open there doors to the HHS kids who do not want to be part of Anderson Schools
