southern gospel

We need southern gospel brought back to south ga. The old wsbx 1020 am may be a good catch being it is not on the air and for some reason the FCC wont pull the license. It has not been on the air for years and bet it will not return on the air anytime soon. you may also could get a lp fm licence for night time coverage if the right owner bought it. If nothing else go old country or southern gospel. ::)

Just a Thought

Ya'know...I think that, if anybody could make a Southern Gospel format fun and profitable, ole' Woody could do it.
Cabo Wabo did pretty well, didn't it?

lol just like the country boy on amercain idol singing motown ;D

Southern Gospel is one of those formats everyone says they want, but when a station goes with it, there almost always seems to be a constant struggle with sales. But if you happen to hit the Powerball this weekend, WSBX would either be a great investment or one heck of a tax write-off. I'd go for it in a heartbeat, just to prove someone could make it work. I have a few pet theories about why SG won't work and one or two ideas about how to make it work. All I need is a radio station ....

Old country is probably a similar situation, but I'd like to have a go at making that work, too!

Not knockin' Woody on this much: As enthusiastic as he is, he just might make them work. All he needs is to get on the air and give it a shot. I still wish him well.

I've never been to South Central Georgia and Southwest Georgia, but I have been to the Coastal Empire AKA the Georgia coastline from Savannah to St. Simons Island to Jekyll Island. No, I've never been to St. Mary's. Do any of you know whether or not 1300 AM WMTM in Moultrie is still playing Southern Gospel? Or have they flipped to black Urban Gospel? WMTM-AM was and maybe still is an affiliate with the Georgia Bulldogs College Sports Radio Network. Unfortunately, the station doesn't stream, and they don't have a website. Radio-Locator says that WMTM-AM is still on the air. If any of you know anything, please let me know. If nobody knows anything, I understand. Thank you.

According to the FCC website, WMTM is licensed to 1300 until April 1, 2012, but I cannot tell you if it is actually operating or what the format is. (I am in the Savannah area.)

The University's syndicator raised it's fees a couple of years ago and made other demands as well, which caused several smaller stations to stop carrying the games. Some of these stations had been carrrying Georgia Football since the earliest broadcasts. Perhaps WMTM was among them, but I cannot tell you that either. In an earlier thread re: WSBX, I seem to recall someone mentioning a station in Moultrie airing Black Gospel, but I may be mistaken. You can search for WSBX on this site, and find plenty to read about 1020 and that part of the state. It isn't much, but I hope it helps.

There are 2 A.M. stations in Moultrie, AM 1300 WMTM, and AM 1400 WHBS. WMTM is southern gospel, and AM 1400 WHBS is the one that is urban gospel.

I can on occasion pick up WMTM-AM in Moultrie with its Southern Gospel format. It's had the format for many years now.

SG can work, but it is a somewhat niche format that takes a couple of years to build. I ran an SG format in Tallahassee starting around the end of April 2002 on an AM daytimer. By 2004 it was billing around $10k a month but required keeping some preaching/teaching programs on the air
to sustain that level of billing.

This is one of those formats that requires somewhat of a long-time commitment in order for it to work, but it can be done. I think you have to have the heart for it, though.

Alan, How is Erwin doing? He was definately the southern gospel man in Tallahassee, Bainbridge, and Chattahoochee.

Just talked to Erwin on Friday!

He's doing well and mostly retired. He's doing an Old Time Southern Gospel station on Live365:

Erwin is one of the best friends I have ever had in the radio industry.

Look at Radio One's 102.5 in Atlanta. I am not too sure of the demo's in your part of GA. but Urban Gospel on a Class A beats a couple of 100KW FMs. Remember the verse about that goes something like "In Christ there is no Jew or Gentile".(IIRC there are several groups named in this verse, I just wish I could remember the whole verse so I could quote it correctly. Sometimes God's plan is a little different that what we "think" they should be. Maybe Urban Gospel is an answer for 1020.

Thomasville already has an established urban/black gospel station on WSTT 730, which it has been playing since late 1995. It is pretty well-supported in the community.

Tallahassee has several stations playing this format as well.

In the past, 1020 did play some CCM and Southern Gospel. There actually is a format void in Southern and old-time gospel music.

If the FCC ever really looks at this situation and finds out how long it's been off the air, they will delete the license. That's the scary part, in my opinion.

Alan, as I have said before, once the license is lost, that will be the end of the station as it once existed. You are right to find the situation scary, I think. Once the 1020 license is vacated, it will never return to that community. If the current owners are serious about operating the station, I hope they get it all pulled together fairly quickly - or if they find they cannot, I hope they are successful in finding a buyer who has the ability to make the station viable. Someone needs either to get wsbx on the air, or step aside and allow another entity to get it up and broadcasting.

Yep So Gospel does have listeners. Worked as PD moons ago at KHYM in Tx. I formatted it just like a top 40 station with charted tunes, recurrents n oldies so to speak. Even had a lunch time request program that kept the phones riniging. Only problem we had were the preachers not paying up.

I recall being instructed not to let a local minister on the air if he didn't pay up. He did pay up. He came in with a packet of Bens. Where he got the money ... only the good Lord knows, but he got it and he did his program that day.
