Southern Utah DX 6/24/2010

I was on vacation hiking near Navajo Lake, Utah last Thursday and stumbled upon a nice E-Skip opening while twisting the dial on my car radio. In one hour I was able to hear 13 stations over 800 miles from my QTH. There were many more mixing in as well, but I was unable to get enough info to ID them. I listened for about an hour before the signals started to fade. By the time I returned from my hike about 4 hours later at 3 PM, the E-skip conditions were gone and it was just the usual Las Vegas and Southern Utah stations occupying the FM dial. Most of the LV stations came in solid at about 165 miles away due to the high elevation (9,300 ft) and line of sight to the SW.

Here are the catches in order starting at about 11 AM mountain time:

WKYX 94.3 Golconda IL 1,326Mi 3,100 ERP 449 HAAT
KMYK 93.5 Osage Beach,MO 1,096 39,000 551
KOMC 100.1 Branson MO 1,068 36,000 577
WCBL 99.1 Grand Rivers,KY 1,345 16,000 417
KSPW 96.5 Sparta MO 1,082 50,000 492
WDDJ 96.9 Paducah KY 1,326 100,000 778
KCMQ 96.7 Columbia MO 1,114 100,000 912
KAMS 95.1 Mammoth Spring,AR 1,172 100,000 650
KTTS 94.7 Springfield MO 1,070 98,000 1,102
KOMG 92.9 Ozark , MO 1,078 50,000 492
KIAI 93.9 Mason City IA 1,102 100,000 791
KNEN 94.7 Norfolk NE 869 100,000 539
KNWC 96.5 Sioux Falls SD 937 100,000 1,601

Just wondering, are you able to get 94.5 The Vibe over there? Does it sound stronger than the other LV stations?

Do you get any e-skips from California & the Northwest, especially?
I'm sure it's very possible.

Recently, I heard a skip in TX from California. Los Angeles and San Diego stations were booming in crystal clear. Then, the next day, I heard stations in northern California, southern Oregon, and northwest Nevada.

I bet it's very possible to receive skips like that in Utah.

shradiohead,

Those are great catches! Wow, hearing a Kentucky FM station in Utah.

And as for 94.5 the Vibe--eww. Sorry, I'm not a fan of dance music.

Almost two Kentucky stations. Golconda, IL is on the Ohio river, just across from Kentucky.

Nick- Yes, 94.5 the Vibe was coming in at about the same level as most of the stronger LV stations (92.3/93.1/95.5/97.1/104.3). The only non-southern UT/LV area station that I recall getting was KXAZ- Page, AZ and KLGL- Richfield, UT. Both which almost reach the Brian Head area on their fringe coverage, so that was no big surprise. Since I was on the southern side of the mountains, no SLC area stations were received.

The funny thing is that I wasn't actively searching for DX that morning, but when I heard the tail end of Rush Limbaugh and a promo for "WKYX", I immediately knew that there was an E-skip opening. I have not been lucky enough to hear E-skip in San Diego yet.

One other thing I need to correct is that I heard these stations on Friday, June 25, not the 24th as previously noted.
