SOUTHLAND

The actor playing the gay cop issued a lengthy rant about the 'quality' not being understood but in actuality it was between boring and terrible. No surprise to me it got canned.

You meant to say "in my opinion it was between boring and terrible" as I found it to be one of the best shows on TV. But I wasnt expecting it to last because I knew there were people out there that shared your opinion.

I never saw the show, but it's just the latest Jay Leno victim. As the Gawker blog said, "that place on the schedule is no longer available because Jay Leno gobbled up the primetime lineup like John Travolta at an all-you-can-eat buffet."

Yep, the nerve of that Leno, taking a sweet deal when offered to him.

That aisde, what's to say that if the 10 pm hour was available that they'd have made a different decision on this particular show?

You flatter Leno.

Apparently there were many more of "me" than "you".

I don't find repetitious gun-waving at stereotypes inspiring or even "good". "Southland's" stories can be read in every daily edition of any big-city newspaper. Maybe it's just me but I'm getting very tired of the same old shoot 'em ups and cops with alcohol, drug, sex and partner problems. Maybe the rest of the country is too.

Southland was an excellent TV crime drama. Some of the people involved in ER put Southland on the air. The characters had depth and interesting background stories. Maybe there were too many characters.

In fact, I resent NBC for introducing the show last season in ER's time slot to much fanfare with a limited initial run of just a handful of episodes, then quietly cancels the show saying it has nowhere to put it. NBC could have cut held it in limbo in case another show fails... although NBC also reportedly said it was too "dark" to run at 9pm. I guess all the Law & Order shows are light and breezy? Oddly enough, the original Law & Order with Sam Waterston is still on NBC's schedule. More than a year ago, NBC had said new episodes would run on USA, not NBC, with a cut in the per-episode budget. Yet here it is, sometimes running twice a week, on NBC's new schedule.

It must have cost tons of money to put a show like Southland together just to run a few episodes. I had heard the ratings were OK.. although anyone knows a drama with a complicated storyline needs time to build an audience... but as ER proved, once you got'em, you hold onto an audience for a long time.

I suppose NBC is trying to cut its outlay for programming and Southland is a victim.

It's just this type of decision that further fractionalizes their potential audience, driving more and more people to cable where shows like "Weeds" "Dexter" "Mad Men" "Breaking Bad" and others are thriving. It's almost like the parent company is actually trying to kill NBC.

Except Southland was none of these. Yes there was drinking, but no one had an alcohol problem. I cant remember any main character taking any drugs. And I can remember 1 "sex" scene which was just two people kissing.

Never saw the show, but it's too bad that hardly anyone who was in "Band Of Brothers" can land a steady gig, in this case, Michael Cudlitz, who played Bull in "BoB". If I'm not mistaken, Damien Lewis's cop show "Life" is gone, too. That leaves Neal McDonough ("Desperate Housewives"), Matthew Settle ("Gossip Girl"), and yes, Jimmy Fallon.

My comment was directed specifically at Southland but rather at the genre.

Neal McDonough hasn't been on DH for quite a while now....probably because he was "killed" in an auto crash?

It's a soap...He can come back, right? I mean, if Jimmy Fallon can wake up with Al...

To be honest I don't remember if he actually "died" in the crash. The writers might have left him hanging (so to speak). He was a scary-looking dude though. Would have been a natural for that "NY family" they have in there now.

Personally, I liked DH much better when they capitalized on black humor as opposed to all the standard soap fare. It seems to lose something when they get serious.
