Southside and the Regular Guys update...

Has anyone listened to Southside Steve on the Eagle? Is there ANY water cooler talk about what he's doing there? I haven't listened yet.

Also...

What's the latest with Larry finding a gig? And has anyone heard from Eric?

Eric's Myspace blog said he was close to announcing something. Something that he will control and can't be taken away from him by the random whim of a radio exec. I am paraphrasing but that was the essence of it. Not sure if he is going to be buying airtime or tackling internet radio or podcasts. Either way the pay doesn't sound great.

I'm enjoying SSS on the Eagle, i've never listened to country or that station before. Sound like he's doing a lot of remote appearances, and they're all saying yea c'mon. He seems like a good fit there.
Pretty ironic he did a recorded bathroom bit the other day!

He is making Rhubarb sound better also. It is also bringing out the old Rhubarb with his funny wit. When Rhubarb use to do it with Dallas, she would just roll her eyes. Now Southside seems to be egging Rhubarb on and vice versa. Dallas has got her hands full with these two together IMHO.

Well... that's good to hear. Nothing like someone new and hungry to spark someone that's way too comfortable.

The guy’s a train wreck. Amateurish bits and self-impressed attitude. The annoying guy from high school who could never understand why everyone else didn’t think he was as funny as he thought he was. It’s clear why his biggest accomplishment at 96Rock was being the butt of everyone else’s jokes. Unfortunately, he didn’t have any listeners there so just who are these new listeners he’s supposed to bring to the Eagle?

But the worst part of it is that he’s on a station that plays country, yet he neither knows nor makes any attempt to learn the music. Wonder how that makes the listeners…who DO like the music…feel? Nothing like having one of your morning show guys constantly telling your Tim McGraw fans how great Vince Neil is. What kind of bizarre programming logic is this?

Before he arrived, Eagle was limping along. Now, it’s time for the last rites.

Ouch!
I like Southside. I'm one new listener he brought.
(who doesn't like good trainwreck?)

I disagree... Doesn't matter if he knows the music. Since when was that a criteria for good radio in the morning? Knowing your audience is a different story. I think Steve strikes a cord with most men 25-54. He may be sophomoric and one dimensional but it works. He is a great 3rd mic. Being able to pic his spots for one liners is his gift.

And you have no idea what kind of following he had at 96. His perceptuals were off the charts. He outranked everyone as the most recognizable name at 96rock for a long time.

Sounds personal to me. That being said, I've seen Steve's popularity first-hand, and you can bet he's brought a good number of fans (and client$$$) to Eagle. As for not knowing who the artists are; I'm willing to bet the listeners get a kick out of it, and it gives Rhubarb the chance to pick on him a little (which, again, I'm sure the listeners like).

I like Eagle's morning show, and I think Southside Steve has been a great addition to the team. He has a different perspective than Rhubarb and makes the show much more entertaining. I liked Rhubarb & Dallas before, and I think the show is even better now.

And the audio quality is much better than Moby in the Morning....

If my comments sounded like a personal attack then I apologize because that wasn't my intent. It’s not personal…I’ve never even met the guy. We all have to work and I don’t fault Steve for taking any job that’s offered to him. But he’s clearly a square peg in a round hole at Eagle. I’m speaking as a (male 25-to-54) listener who’s insulted by the idea of a station putting on a guy who sounds like he’s still in 7th grade and who shows such disdain for the very music I’m tuning in to hear. In any case, I’ll offer you this prediction. Within 6-12 months, one of the following two things will happen:

Either

1) Victor or the new owners step in and put an end to this bizarre experiment.

Or

2) The few remaining Eagle listeners abandon ship and there’s a format change.

Either way, Southside is out.

(As for Moby, I find his show unlistenable. But I have WNGC on my presets because I enjoy
the station the rest of the day)

Too bad Moby didn't get rid of all the MP3's when he built his new studio. After the complaints a few months back I thought they would pay more attention to technical issues.
I never get the chance to listen.....

I disagree with you. Listeners love him or they can’t stand him, but either way he makes an impression and people tune in.

My prediction is that Southside will prove to be a positive move for Eagle.

As for Moby in the morning, I think his show sounds like it does because he is not at the station using thier equipment. He would sound better on the station I think. They have added Uncle Rich in the afternoons, coming soon so I heard, so that might become a station to be watching out for.

Even if you don't like Southside Steve. He has an audience. That's been proven time, and time again.
I say good for Steve. I hope you prove everyone wrong!

Steve is awesome. The guy has the ability to come off with one-liners that no one else would think of. I bet Rhubarb is feeling the pain!

The addition of Southside Steve to Eagle has made the morning show better than it has been in years.

The earlier poster got it right. They needed a 3rd mic desperately and Steve has always got a different take on whatever they're talking about. Often a very funny take.

Having worked at 106.7 and knowing Rhubarb a little bit, it would be interesting to know what he thinks. It's no secret that Ruby is not the choirboy he presents himself as, but he knows he's got to play it nice for the Southern Baptist blue-hair crowd.

In other words, he's probably laughing harder at SSS on the inside than he is on the mic.

I've had just the opposite reaction to it, it's pretty much unlistenable for me at this point. Not so much because of Steve, but because of the ... I don't know, "discomfort" is as good a word as any I guess, that comes across so strongly to me.

It's like listening to two people that have been forced to share a table at lunch with someone they really don't have much in common with & have no real interest in talking to but are forced to in order to be polite. It just seems so strained for all of them that I find it uncomfortable to listen to.

I agree with middlega ... uncomfortable listening to the morning show ... SSS perhaps with a little too much
locker room humor for my taste. Not trying to be ugly here - just my honest two cents worth.
