Southwest Florida AM bandscan highlights (1)

Apologies for being a little late to post this, but here are highlights from my stay at my Sister's condo near Ft. Myers Jan 15-19. Third floor unit, which was the top floor of the building. The location is on a canal adjacent to a marina and about three miles from Charlotte Harbor and the open Gulf of Mexico. Relatively noise free, but I did have to orient the radio north-south to null some weak to moderate electrical noise. I was primarily using the Sangean ATS-505 and the SRF-37. What follows is nighttime unless otherwise noted.....

First the General Observations...

Cuba: The big signal Cubans on 530 570, 640, 670, 710, 950, and 1180 were audible 24/7. Usually tripping the scan button in the car.

Chicago: WGN, WBBM, and WMVP were all audible. The latter being covered up by the "wobbler" as noted in another thread. WGN had the best signal. WSCR and WLS were completely covered up by Cuba (The Cuba 890 was barely audible during the day).

New York: The only New Yorker I heard was WFAN on 660

Miami and Tampa. Most of the sticks were between 80 and 110 miles away (north-northwest and east-southeast respectively). The signals were mostly weak during the day and mostly invisible at night.

Now for some specifics....

620: WDAE was probably the strongest day signal, but a Cuban signal was mixing with it. Night was basically slop
650: WSM Fair
680: WPTF Weak, but mostly alone. WGES also audible on the channek
700: WLW Fair
710: WAQI was probably the best Miami day signal. Cuba audible underneath by day, dominating at night
740: CFZM on top nightly. Biggest surprise of my stay. After years of trying for it in St. Pete as well as in Pensacola, it turns up south of both with a pretty good signal.
760: WJR Good
810: Bahamas Fair-Good
870: WWL mixing with R. Reloj
880, 890 & 900: All R. Progreso
1000: XEOY under WMVP and the wobbler
1020: KDKA weak
1060: XEEP on top of KYW. I didn't expect to hear KYW
1090: KAAY weak
1100: WTAM good
1110: WBT fair
1120: KMOX weak
1200: WOAI weak but audible underneath with Ft. Myers area local
1220: XEB rather weak, but on top
1510: WLAC fair
1530: WCKY fair
1540: Bahamas fait-good

If you have questions or would like me to elaborate on anything in particular, please let me know.

.....Jack

On 740, WYGM has such a dominating signal across central Florida at night that CFZM is a hard catch.

Only heard it pop through once in a great while in Tampa.

But you were far enough south that WYGM was not much of an issue.

That reminds me of how many times now, I've heard WBBM here in Hawaii while it's impossible in California which as much closer due to the relative closeness of KKOH.

Just last night, WBBM was easily audible behind KKOH and it even dominated for short periods of time.

Thanks for the report from Florida Cyberdad. Hawaiigar re: WBBM, that station really gets out these days. The other night I heard it on the Northern Ireland Global Tuners receiver as strong as I've ever heard it.
