WCRR/Rural Retreat, VA Sold!
ORA ROBERT SMALLWOOD III sells Talk WCRR-A/RURAL RETREAT, VA to THREE RIVERS MEDIA CORPORATION. The price for the station was redacted from the contract filed with the FCC.
When I had the pleasure of meeting Robert 3 years old, he was a 17 year old high school Junior, so I'm guessing he's now about 20 years old. The station used to belong to his mother and was given to him when she died. From what he told me, he dad works for a few religious TV stations in the area.
The company that bought it., owns the FM in town.. WXBX! If I'm not mistaken, that was the former sister station to 660AM WCRR and The Smallwoods sold it several years ago to the people who JUST bought the AM. The FM bays are STILL on the AM Stick just off the highway.
It's a quaint little facility in a beautiful area. Modern and up-to-date? Absolutely not. But it served it's purpose.
When traveling to Mississippi, I wa sin my friends Jeep and we happened to see the radio tower along the side of the highway. We drove around, pulled over and walked up to the building. We ended up having a 2 1/2 hour long conversation with the then owner. I even had an aircheck of me doing their legal id, sign off.. and pictures of me hitting the "plates off' button on a tube transmitter being cooled by a box fan.
