Hank Aaron didnt need a * Kudos to Dave OBrien. Wish he was on all 162 Sox radio games. For playoff afarid he might be doing some ALDS or NLDS games on ESPN Radio. If Sox get to WS sure he will be on with Joe Catisg.

I've heard that Babe Ruth comment many times. What effect would black players have had on his home run total? Would the black outfielders have jumped higher to take away home runs? The only pitcher of note from the Negro League that I've ever heard of was Satchel Paige, who played after Ruth. Black pitchers have been in the majors for 60 years and only a handful have made the hall of fame. Perhaps Josh Gibson would have hit more homers than Ruth, but that would have had no effect on Ruth's total.

In the 20s, baseball was not as developed in the Carribean and South American countries, so there is no case for the lack of black Hispanics. There just wouldn't have been many players available.

Babe Ruth is the true savior of baseball. After the White Sox threw the 1919 World Series, the disdain was such that the sport may have died. Babe Ruth brought it back to life.

I was listening to a sports talk program out of Portland (WJAB) last week, and this topic came up. The host mentioned that O'Brien had a signed deal a couple of years ago to do the television for the Chicago Cubs and he had to pass at the last minute (the Cubs had already called a press conference to announce his hiring) because ESPN wouldn't let him out of this contract.

Same problem here. Either Entercom lived with his limited availability (for at least a while) or they weren't going to get him. I guess they figured it was worth it to sign the deal now and wait for the ESPN situation to sort itself out.

Geffner may be 'Larry's boy', but he's only on the air because ESPN hardballed O'Brien and Geffner was willing to take a temporary part time gig.

What effect would black players have had on his home run total ? Maybe Ruth career may had been cut short ( cant make the team in his older years,or his fat a$$ may had to try to stay in shape ) if all race of people was able play in Major league baseball . Second , All Black Talent Baseball players ,was turn away from baseball ( Why are you playing baseball ? you will never make it ) until The Negro league was form . My opinion ,Babe Ruth and any Baseball records( MLB and Negro League ) before Jackie Robinson get a * .

If Bonds has, indeed, been on steroids , then this dubious "achievement" means nothing.
He should be ashamed, and kicked out of pro baseball. Another poor role model for the youth

Because it should be obvious, even to you, that he cheated. No one with a brain is buying his "I didn't know they were steroids" excuse. One Google search could have told him what he continues to deny.

And...there is ample precedent. The Chicago "Black Sox" players were tried in a court of law, and found not guilty on all charges (perpetrating a public hoax, conspiring to defraud MLB and conspiring to defraud Charles Comiskey, the owner of the White Sox). No matter...the Commissioner of Baseball, who was also a federal judge, read the evidence and testimony, decided that it showed all eight had been involved with known gamblers, and banned them for life. There were no rules in place, at that time, prohibiting baseball players and managers from dealing with gamblers. Those rules were put in after the Black Sox scandal.

Not bad against Triple A talent . I am sure if Ruth played with and against all race of humans, Those numbers will be alot lower ( If Ruth was able to make the team ) .

At their highest level African Americans made up 19% of MLB. This was in the 70s. That is currently down to 7.6%. My point is that they were never that much of a factor. In particular the pitchers, who would have had the only direct effect on Ruth. It was a huge injustice to ban them, however they never reached the significance of the percentage of the NBA or NFL African American levels.

If they had played, MLB still would have been 81% non-black at their highest level. Triple-A? To say that the major leagues were Triple-A because a group that represented less than 10% of the U.S. population at the time, was excluded, is not logical. According to that reasoning Jackie Robinson broke into a league that was only at Triple-A level. Doesn't that diminish his, and many of the early African American ballplayers', accomplishments?

There are virtually no African Americans in the NHL. Should all of the records before the first Black Hockey player be asterisked? There was probably a de facto ban in the NHL. It just went unnoticed.
