SOX on BOS?

So All Access says the Sox may buy part of WBOS and put games on there. If this happens, will there be a format change to sports?? This is becoming a popular method for flagships.

A close friend of mine at Greater Media says this is closer to happening than we think and a buy by the Red Sox would most certainly mean a format flip to sports for BOS. This would be huge... the Sox, and their affiliation with NESN would mean an all access pass to anything Red Sox for the station. If they could secure the Patriots from BCN, or the Bruins or Celtics from BZ and RKO this would mean big trouble for EEI.

The big question... will the Sox keep Dave Douglas on payroll and let him sell hot dogs at Fenway?

While this would be a good move for WBOS, I'd hate to see John Laurenti displaced. John is one of the harder working jocks in the area and recently gave up his MD/afternoon drive gig at WHJY to be on the air @ WBOS..

Has anyone heard the promo on EEI regarding Sox broken promises. In it they mention the implicit promise not to trade Arroyo. The kicker is they mentioned the move of the Sox from EEI to another station. I heard it while listening on the internet, so I don't know if it went out over the air.

<font color=green> Yup, I heard it. Look maybe they are cocky enough to think they can tell the Sox they aren't paying up. And I think they could get away with it if another station didn't come in with a similar format PLUS the Sox contract. If BOS were to program music all-day and the Sox all-evening, EEI wouldn't take a big ratings hit in m/a drive. They would be strictly a talk station without either of the desired contracts, Sox or Pats.<font color=green>

John Laurenti is certainly an asset to Greater Media. I'm sure they would find a place for him. Don't forget that WBOS is HD and they would probably have one channel sports and the other music, so don't plan any farewell parties.

BTW, not only is John hard-working and an excellent announcer, he's one heck of a nice guy.

Would it though? Are we sure the BOS thing is not just a Sox ploy to get EEI to ante up more dollars? Doesn't Greater Media own 6 FM's in the metro...that is not allowed by FCC rules. They would have to sell more then a majority share inorder for it to not qualify, 25% is not a majority.

WEEI has set it self up for big things no matter what, they are now simulcasting on 3 stations and soon to be a fourth with the addition of a Springfield FM (plus a ME sation in teh works). This makes them the most powerfull terestrial radio station, virtually covering all of New England. These are all benifits for the sox. I can understand that the Sox want controll of content...but do teh fans wnat that? I mean look at the globe and how biased the opinon is. WEEI is a great station and if the sox merley wanted to be on an FM i am sure taht entercom would be more then happy to flip one of their 4 FM's to accomidate this request instead of the sox leavin.

The management at the sox is widly known to take negotiations to the last minuet (sometimes blowin up in their face). I know that entercom has given the sox a deadline of opening day to make a choice. To me the sox leavin WEEI would be a worse PR move for them then it would be for Entercom. But i can see both parties thriving seperate...that is until Satalite takes over and kills all terestrial radio sattions in 7-10 years...

On the other hand....

If the sale goes through, 'RoR can start hittin those currents, eh?

Greater Media will spin-off one of it's five existing FM stations when it takes over WCRB-102.5 later this year.

Most likely, the station spun-off will be WKLB-99.5 (since it's transmitter is well north of Boston and the station's signal is not as strong in areas well south of Boston than most of the area's other FM stations), but that station's call letters and format will probably be transferred to 102.5, replacing classical music.

It's certainly possible that the Red Sox could buy a radio station outright (instead of buying a percentage of one of Greater Media's existing FM stations, as has been rumored).

Why the Sox probably won't buy WBOS (or any other station) outright:

1. The debt service on the purchase of the team and improvements to Fenway must be enormous! It's not that the team doesn't have the money, it's that they need to spend it in other areas. Plus they'll need $$$ to hire staff and air personalities, throwing the benefits of staying in-house away for the first year or 2. NESN was an existing station with an in-force sales staff, technical staff and on-air personalities when the current Sox ownership took over. The startup costs were long ago amaratized (sp?).

2. It takes a while for a new station to catch on after launch, and we all know of station flips that go to the top for a book or two then crash. Ask the Celtics - owning a station to put your team on is no guarantee of long-term success. The Sox have a better chance of success, but there are no guarantees.

3. What would they run for the overnights/weekends? ESPN, SNR and FSR are all spoken for in the market. There is no way they would be live 24/7 - not even NESN does that!

4. They would be expanding at the same time that part-owner Boston Globe is laying off people. I know that radio and newspapers are not synonomous, and that the Globe's parent company is purchasing WJAR 10 in Providence, but this is too close to home and basically un-PC.
