Sox to EEI-FM in '06

Brief story in the business section of this morning's ProJo that WEEI-FM will carry Boston Red Sox games starting in the 2006 season. WPRO's contract expires at the end of this season.

I already knew that...I forget from where though, but it was announced awhile back.

Wow. That means all of Eastern Connecticut and All of Rhode Island will be able to hear them on FM. Right now in the area they're only on FM in SouthEastern CT on NEWS-TALK 102.3 WXLM.
______________

That was my Question WEEI-FM is part of that market.

I had thought that Entercom had announced that the Sox would move to 103.7 when they acquired that station.

I would expect that 103.7 will also carry the Celtics during the upcoming NBA season.

They did, which makes this press release make no sense. It wasn't even very strong rumors, Entercom announced it straight out. Maybe they just wanted another press release to get out there.

Let's bring up the other team. The Yankees. The games are on flagship station WCBS 880 out of NYC, which is 50KW days and night. They are also on WLAD 800 in Danbury and WICC 600 in Bridgeport. I've had no problems picking up WCBS in Danbury or Bridgeport. With that said I don't see why 102.3 wouldn't continue carrying the Redsox even after in RI they move to 103.7 FM.
______________

WEEI-FM has an impressive signal. They do well south of Boston (I was in Canton
a few weeks back and it came in well), all of RI, and much of CT. As I was
driving I-95 through southern CT, it was very clear from New Haven on up. These
areas have gotten Yanks (WCBS) and Mets (WFAN) clearly for awhile, and now
the Sox will be easily heard as well.

They probably have trouble on the Cape due to WOCN 103.9 but they're on 95.1
down there anyway. By the way the Red Sox Radio Network page on the WEEI
site has some mistakes, like listing WXLM-FM as being on 104.7, and the "map"
shows "WWKJ-FM" as being the Cape affiliate while the list above it correctly
says WXTK 95.1

The projo is about 2 months late on the story. It was just a formality if WEEI took up their option to broadcast games in the '06 season(thier last?), which as the Globe said months ago, they did.
From the Globe
"One benefit for WEEI will be the ability to put games on its Providence outlet 103.7 FM next season. This year, the games are on WPRO (630 AM).

"WEEI had the right to exercise an option, and they did," said Chuck Steedman, Red Sox senior director of broadcast services. "They've been a great partner."

The interesting thing here is that the bidding on the next Bosox contract is probably ongoing, it will expire in Sept.'06. EEI am/fm is likely the frontrunner, but there are expected to be other bidders. So unless a deal is done 103.7 could be on, for just '06 season?

I believe 103.7 can still run Red Sox after 06 even if WEEI-AM loses the bid to be the Flagship. Different Market. All they have to do is outbid WPRO for 07.
