Sox-Yankees Game on 96.5

I'm not a Sox fan, but I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were about the Sox game being bounced to 96.5 FM because 1080AM was carrying the UCONN-ARMY Football Game?

In my opinion I thought it was weird. Just like I think it's weird when UCONN Women's Basketball ends up on 96.5 because 1080 has a UCONN Men's Game at the Same time.

The weirdest thing I remember is one time many years ago The UCONN Men, Women, and Hartford Whalers were All playing on the same night. The UCONN Men were on 1080. The UCONN Women were on Women were on 96.5, and the Hartford Whalers were on 93.7 The 70s Station. 93.7 The 70s station was the overflow station for the Whalers because as a former Whalers fan I remember listnening to many games on 93.7 The 70s Station becuase 1080 was carrying a UCONN Game.

That's the beauty of having all three stations under one corporate umbrella! However, something tells me the AHL Hartford Wolfpack wouldn't be a good fit on the current verison of 93.7 FM! :)

P.S. Was this a situation in 1996-97?

Congratulations New York Yankees...2005 American League East Champions!

Would the game of worked better on Lite 100.5 or Hot 93.7 if they didn't want to bother WTIC-FM

In the early 90s the Whalers games were on tape delay when UCONN played on WTIC. The games were still available live on the Whalers radio network. It was sometime in the 95-96 and 96-87 seasons that they were heard on 93.7.

The Wolfpack don't have to worry. They can be heard on the net when there is a conflict with WPOP.

Although stanger things have happened I doubt sports would end up on HOT 93.7 or Lite 100.5, what I think would happen is they would try to make an arrangement with a non-co-owned station. Before Disney bought 1050 AM in NYC and flipped it to ESPN Radio, Infinity's WFAN used to use 1050 for conficting games. Now I think they use WBBR 1130.

Also what stations were on the Whaler's Radio Network anyway? I know they were on WTIC 1080. And a friend of mine who worked at Southington's WNTY 990 AM in the very early 90s told me he used to board op the Whaler's Games for that station, which picked up the games via telephone.

WLAD Danbury used to carry Whalers games. If I recall correctly, we used to take the audio feed from the SAP channel of the TV in the news booth.

"...How can you be deaf, with ears like that??"</P>

There were several stations on the network, but most of the time other sports took precedence over the Whale, especially toward the end. As a result, most stations only ran some of the games. WILI/Willimantic was an affiliate, but the Whalers would only air if there wasn't a Celtics or UConn conflict, which happened often. WLIS/Old Saybrook was also on the network, and they also pre-empted them for UConn. I think WICH/Norwich and WINY/Putnam were also on the network, but they may have dropped off by the early 90's.

I board-teched many a Whaler game at WILI and WLIS way back when. They had a phone feed for a long time, then went to the Channel 3 SAP channel a few years before bolting for Carolina. IIRC, UConn also distributed their games on SAP (Channel 61?) around that time. Once I lost the Whaler phone feed at WLIS and I had to pot up the raw feed of WTIC from the EAS box to keep the game on. Yeah, that sounded good....
