Sox-Yankees: You Picked A Fine Time To Leave Me, Lucille

Last night's Red Sox radio broadcast kept having technical problems (WEEI network). At several points during the game, including crucial moments in the 9th inning, suddenly the connection went dead
and a board op had to insert commercials, usually one about a Kenny Rogers concert that started out with a clip from "(You Picked A Fine Time To Leave Me) Lucille". Aaargh! I was at work where we managed to pull in the interference-laden WEEI signal barely, and getting the WCBS Yankees version (it is high...it is far...it is gone) was out of the question. Anyway at CRUCIAL POINTS in the game,
the signal went dead! (Tying runs on, potential winning run at the plate.)

I blame Steinbrenner's ghost! Sox won anyway!
And the pitch--

...

...You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille...

I listen to 'EEI on 1440 and many, many times they will just interrupt an interview with a block of commercials and come back as if nothing happened. Also, quite often, they come back from breaks a few seconds late. You can tell because there'll be no bumper music and the host is in mid sentence. I usually say something to the effect that the someone forget to give the chimp a banana. Are you saying that there's an actual person on hand that allows these things to happen?

While on the subject of WEEI, Matt Perrault was gone from Sports Saturday and John Ryder was on in place. Perrault was not mentioned as being out for the week or mentioned at all for that matter. I hope he didn't make it through his probationary period. Now if they would drop the other weenie, Minihane, a Bradford/Ryder show would be very good. I don't know how things work at 'EEI, but why wasn't Ryder considered for the mid day show? He is light years ahead of Muttnansky.

Is this, like, a serious post? A radio station baving technical problems is worthy of comment? I guess you think your constitutional right not to be inconvenienced was violated.

EDS has a way of turning some folks into the radio board eqivalent of those of those self-centered Facebook dweebs who feel a compulsion to broadcast what they had for breakfast. Do you really want to be that guy?

On the other hand, if only WRKO had hired your guru Maloney, these glitches would be a thing of the past.

Actually it isn't really a serious post, I was just having a little fun with the situation. Hey, I realize stuff happens like this, but of course we know the Sox and Yankees have a long-running rivalry and some of us have to work nights and we enjoy listening to the ballgames. I was just saying, "Yeah,
sometimes stuff screws up but it was doing so at a very pivotal time in the game." So it was kinda funny that every time an important at-bat was to happen, along comes that ad for the Kenny
Rogers show. For the humor-impaired, let me explain that I was just having a little fun with this.

EDS means that some people on the board can have a little fun with bigwig talk hosts who say they can't leave the job they hate, yet probably will wind up re-signing because the other stations won't
match a salary. EDS means that a station that lucked into a variety-hits format and will likely stay with it probably won't change to simulcasting or broadcasting baseball on FM (within 128) like so many other markets have been doing--but hey, I'm a capitalist so if Entercom can make lots of
money then so be it, but I have every right, sir, to have a little fun at their expense. It also means others can be upset.

They can choose not to read my posts if so. Of course it would deny you the opportunity to
mis-interpret my humor.

As for Maloney, he's not my guru, I have a little fun with him, too. Again, need I put emoticons
all over my post to help explain them to the humor-impaired? Emoticons are expensive. They are
tied to the high cost of fuel these days and one must conserve. ;) In the future I would suggest people with humorous posts put a disclaimer up: "NON-SERIOUS POST" or "LOL".

For breakfast, I'm taking out a fellow DJ to the Hilltop buffet because I lost a Super Bowl bet
with him and we're finally meeting so I can pay up. Curse you, Steelers! :)

Regards,

sounds like a good time and reason for the Sox brass to dump Entercom....

Don't mind the troll.

Sox and Entercom are partnered till at least 2016 I think , maybe even past then...they want to keep 'em away from CBS. Can you imagine "This is Red Sox Baseball on the 98.5 The Sports Hub
Red Sox Radio Network"?

Quite a mouthful lol

But seriously, what if it got really bad and they kept on having problems, or if something else happened, could the Sox legally pull out of their contract?

How about NESN, with their increasingly frequent habit of coming back from ad breaks during or after the first at-bat of an inning? Yeah, we really needed to see the same ad twice in a row.

The Sox won't pull out on NESN. They're tight with the owners.

Which one do you mean, W.B. Mason or Dunkin Donuts :)

at least they don't have the annoying cabbie/sporting goods store ads this season.

My wife was listening to 99.5, which she keeps on in her home office, today. Suddenly, it went silent...absolutely SILENT. Like no sound at all. Nil...nada...zilch!!!! What was she to do?

She waited while they fixed the 'glitch' and it came back on! Who wudda thunk it?

Another case of WGBH Educational Foundation Derangement Syndrome nipped in the bud.

Now we'll have to see if GBH can successfully rid themselves of the 99.7 pirate who goes back to the days when Nassau ran WCRB. A big money legit station shouldn't have squatters next to them on the dial, folks who care not whom they inconvenience because they don't think a license is needed. But I am showing a case of Datz Hits Derangement Syndrome here. :p

I'm guessing they weren't playing the piece by John Cage that is 4:33 of silence, at the spur of the moment

>>The premiere of the three-movement 4'33″ was given by David Tudor on August 29, 1952, at Woodstock, New York as part of a recital of contemporary piano music. The audience saw him sit at the piano and, to mark the beginning of the piece, close the keyboard lid. Some time later he opened it briefly, to mark the end of the first movement. This process was repeated for the second and third movements.

Ed Schulz may have had a fill-in on today, but WWZN in Boston had to ditch out of the show
early so they could present a Spanish-language baseball game. Yet another example of a big
evil corporation causing problems for progressives. I did some research and found the big
corporation is located at 4 Yawkey Way in Boston, although the team was apparently on the
road today. Yes, prog talk fans are shouting Curse You Red Sox today :)*

*--not that the team hasn't been subject to curses before :))
