Spanish 780 / 1000

Here in Duluth, MN, I regularly hear Spanish stations under these frequencies, both with music, but have yet to identify either of them. Any idea what they are?

The one on 1000 may be in Mexico City. I've picked that up before when away from Chicago and the infuence of WMVP. Do you ever get WMVP in Duluth?

All the time. That's what it's under.

My guess is that you're getting XEOY from Mexico City on 1000. They have a potent nighttime signal, which I've even heard here about 30 miles from WMVP's stick. When I was in college in Iowa during the late '60s trying to listen to WCFL, XEOY used to be a real pest...overpowering the Chicago signal as often as not.

Listen long enough, and you should be able to catch a distinctive "sing-song" four note logo/ID. If you do, its "Radio Mil", XEOY.

As for 780, I generally get a strong nighttime Spanish signal when I'm travelling in Texas. Never caught an ID, however.

I'm pretty certain I heard the "Radio Mil" jingle last night, four notes Ra - di - o (lower) - Mil (higher). I'm not going to log it quite yet, but I'll see if I can come to a more definite conclusion tonight.

I also should mention I often receive Spanish under WJR, too, on 760. I used to under 770, but now it's generally HD hash.

That's the jingle. I'm sure you'll confirm it sooner rather than later. The jingle tends to be audible when nothing else from XEOY is even remotely discernable. Not unlike the time pips from Cuba's Radio Reloj.

Years ago in the 60s & 70s when AM 1000 in Chicago then WCFL was down for transmitter ma
tenance on Monday mornings, you could here "Radio Mil" easily in the Chicago area.

Some of the Mexico City stations really do make it out. Another is XEX on 730 kHz, which is currently running a sports radio format as "Estadio W". I hear Spanish regularly up here on that frequency, which I believe is XEX. I have actually heard the XEX ID (though as to whether it is the station I usually receive I am not totally certain).

Even with local 50K blaster sending about 150KW ERP in my direction here in suburban Houston, Mexico City's 730 is loud here. It comes in early and stays late.
For those closer to Chicago, any idea why the 50K clears (except for 1000) have been coming in a lot better down here in Texas the past two months or so? I couldn't get them to save my life during the summer, but WSCR, WGN, WBBM and WLS have been regulars here since early October.

Yes, the time of the season. Fall, Winter and early Spring are always better for dxing. Summer is the worst, because of static and long daylight.

AM 1000 (now WMVP) doesn't need to be off to catch XEOY in Northern Illinois. I'm 30 miles north of the WMVP stick and can usually do it just by nulling WMVP on my Sony fm walkman.
