Spanish on 1040?

What's the name of the Spanish station that bleeds into 1040's signal at night?

I want to start a campaign to get it shut down so I can listen to 1040 as I make my rounds in Oldsmar at night.

You'll be lucky to hear 1040 clearly in Oldsmar at night. Signal pattern has a big null to the North and since they're missing one of their 3 towers, I'm honestly not sure what kind of pattern or power they're currently running. You might be out of luck.

Used to be 1040 WHO out of Des Moines that blew in. I'm thinking either a Cuban station or maybe a local pirate?

And, given what 1040 is running these days...are we really missing anything?

It all depends, FM 100. Where are you? A minor detail that matters when inquiring.

If in the Tampa Bay area, the two most likely candidates are (in order) XER, Monterrey, Mexico, or Radio Guama, western side of Cuba. There are no AM pirates on 1050 AM. I wish.

Oh wait, 1040 you say, not 1050. In that case, Radio Maybeque from Cuba is the dominant but make sure WHO isn't brokering something non-English. And I am in Pinellas County, FWIW.

I am sure it is Cuba. You may recall that 1040 (WHBO back then) was one of the Tampa Bay area stations that was slammed with heavy Cuban interference back in the 1980s. Prior to that, WHBO had put out a great daytime signal over much of Florida, but during that period, Cuba really hit them south of Sarasota.

Those of you who were here back in the mid 80's may remember a great Scott Robbins promotion. WHBO, the oldies station, suffered tremendous interference from Cuban radio. In fact, we couldn't even use the air monitor! Robbins, being the promotion minded guru that he was saw an opprotunity. On air we started a plea that "Russian radio was getting in the way of YOUR music". A listener who was a musician even recorded a song "We don't want Russina radio" or something like that. Robbins then orchestrated a rally on Clearwater Beach with the world's largest American flag in protest of Russian radio. The staff and scads of listeners unfolded a huge flag across the sand. Jeff Laurence was there with us and maybe he can add to this.
