Spanish on 1400: WLLH or a pirate?

Yesterday just before 5 pm I noticed something on 1400, while driving on Rt 128 in Peabody. It was a loop
of Spanish language talk (echoed) and synthesizer noises and it seemed to say something like
"we are preparing...more music...are you ready?" if my translation was right. The signal was quite
strong and I wondered if it was a pirate from Lynn or Peabody (the echo was so much that it was
tough to make out what was being said). Or is it WLLH 1400 turning on again? The signal got slightly
weaker when I got into downtown Lynnfield...

(sorry about the new username - been so long since my last post, I forgot what I was using...)

As for 1400 - it is my understanding that it is NOT a pirate and it is a legit station. Apparently, the company that owns 1110 in Providence (and stations in MA?) is making a go of a local operation in Lawrence to compete with the Spanish radio outlets up here. A few former personalities from Costa Eagle's Power 800 are also expected to be on board with the operation. Not sure of an official launch date, but now it's got me curious to hear what they're doing...need to venture around Lawrence to hear the signal.

Well if they were coming from Lynn or Peabody they'd def. be a pirate--and it did seem surprisingly strong
on the stretch of 128 between Peabody and Lynnfield...otherwise, if it's from up around Lawrence I was
figuing it was WLLH (Law. transmitter) ...or would a pirate dare go onto that freq from up there? :)
But apparently it's WLLH, testing....?

Radio-locator says the owner of 1110 in Prov is Video Mundo Broadcasting LLC (that station is "Power 1110")

This morning I was wondering if I was actually picking up WHTB 1400 out of New Bedford but I thought,
no, this is from the Merrimack Valley or North Shore.
Today in Beverly I tuned in again and heard more of the looped message...it keeps saying something like
"estoy pregunta" or "estoy presenta" (probably the latter, we are presenting?), then "radio", etc.

I'm picking it up very well in Methuen, but it's definitely NOT the Lawrence transmitter. There's a dead spot for most moderately-strong AM stations at a point in Methuen called 5 corners where overhead telephone, cable and phone lines interesect with a transformer near the West End Firehouse. When WLLH's Lawrence transmitter is working, about 2 miles away, WLLH keeps coming in. When the Lowell stick is going solo, it crashes under the tsunami of hash, and that's what happened today (Thursday). BTW, nada on 890.

It's a pleasant surprise to see how well Video Mundo is doing down in Providence given that they're stuck on a daytimer. Classic case of making lemonade from a lemon.

They've done more with less than other operators down there (no names will be mentioned to protect the guilty). ;)

As of 3:00 PM - they're playing music (no more looping promo) - but I'm with LG, definitely NOT the Lawrence transmitter. I was out and about in Lawrence and the signal went from decent to hash depending on what block I was at in the city. When 1400 was up and running in Lawrence - it was a decent signal running ESPN, etc. So much so - I could hear it in my basement office in Lawrence.

As an aside - someone mentioned WHTB 1400 and stated it was in New Bedford. As a 1400 WALE/WHTB alum, I'm proud to say WHTB is licensed to Fall River, altho no longer at 130 Rock Street. They're now co-located with sister station WSAR in Somerset. (Sorry - I guess I still bleed Durfee Red and Black)

Around 5 pm I was picking them up on Rt 1, nr Rt 97, in Topsfield. They ID-ed as WLLH Lawrence/Lowell
... "la MEGA" and were playing music. It was faint but was coming in

Oops re: WHTB, I stand corrected!

Hi,
Today 10/30/09 as of 6pm WLLH 1400 is onair in spanish at full power here in Methuen I am getting
full signal 60db. Looks like the lawrence transmitter is back online.

Got fairly well in N. Reading at 11 pm

Not bad (IMHO) for a 1kw from Lawrence - could prove interesting locally. Lets see how "local" they become. Plans from what I hear include a full staff based somewhere in Lawrence.

Smooth presentation, good imaging. They're branding themselfs as "Mega"

Mega Communications is the name of the company that owned WLLH and WAMG years ago. In fact, the WAMG calls stood for Mega; WMGA was in use back then, so they applied for (and got) calls that used the same letters in a different order. Could be that whoever is getting ready to put WLLH back on the air is using tapes that just happened to be around. Of course, stations that call themselves La Mega but have no connection with Mega Communications do exist.

Perhaps this will clear things up:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Ivon Gois, President

Gois Broadcasting announces it has entered into
agreement to purchase new radio station

Effective immediately

(Worcester, MA, November 4, 2009) Gois Broadcasting, LLC is thrilled to announce it has entered into an agreement to purchase WLLH 1400. Gois Broadcasting will broadcast a variety of Latino music on the station. WLLH serves the Lowell and Lawrence, MA radio markets with 1000 watts 24 hours per day. WLLH is broadcasting full time as of now.

Gois Broadcasting, LLC has been serving the Latino communities in several radio markets since 1982. It currently owns WORC 1310 which serves the Latino community in Central Massachusetts, WLAT 910 and WNEZ 1230 which serve the Latino community in the Hartford, CT and WKND 1480 which serves the African American community in Hartford, CT.

“We are thrilled with the opportunity to serve the Latino community in Lowell, Lawrence and surrounding areas. We have a long history of running a business while serving the Latino community and we’re very excited to continue that tradition in a new market. We have many exciting plans for the station and will make a series of announcements on the air very soon” says Ivon Gois, President of Gois Broadcasting.

That's good. The station is in very good hands. If the station has any technical issues GOIS will fix them. Before GOIS got ahold of WKND 1480 in Windsor, Connecticut the station was a technical nightmare. Their 500 watt daytime signal didn't go out as far as it should. And the station suffered from frequencey drift and would be broadcasting on 1482 or 1483 rather than 1480. Plus they didn't use the flea-power at night. Now the station sounds great. Their 500 watt daytime signal goes out much further than it has in a long time. No more frequcency drift. And they make use of their night signal now.
