Anybody else getting spanish on 1610 Khz.? It rolls in here at sunset. I'm in north Alabama. I've heard french on 1610, also, figured it was from Canada. Thanks for your help.

I believe that would be CHHA from Toronto. I've heard them here in Michigan quite a few times.

Are there any US broadcast stations on 1610? There's a local government TIS station on that channel near here, but that's all I ever hear on 1610. If there are no US stations, why not? Was that channel set aside for TIS in this country? If so, that makes it a good Part 15 channel...at least until the IBOC buzz saws are rolled out at night.

Huh... oddly enough, no, I can't find any US stations on 1610. Interesting. Never noticed that.

Once there was one. There's more to the story, but financial problems were the main reason the lone U.S. occupant on 1610 isn't around anymore. In northeast Texas near the Arkansas border, KALT 1610 Atlanta (co-owned with KPYN 900) was on the air briefly a few years ago. (Since the band was wide open, there were reports of it being heard all over North America and at least one logging in Sweden.) The stations were sold and the new owners elected not to keep the X-band license, which was then deleted by the FCC. It won't be back, and there are no plans underway that would allow more stations U.S. stations on that frequency, or for that matter the remainder of the expanded band.

So what was the point of adding the X-band if the FCC isn't going to allow any more stations than they have on it? There aren't any that I can pick up there in the daytime in West TN at all. There are some at night, but that's all.

I think the original idea was that the X-band was a place for stations to get away from the crowding that had overtaken the original band, so in order to prevent crowding on 1610-1700, the commission decided to heavily limit the number of stations on the band. However, considering how extremely few stations there are on the band today, there's no reason they couldn't open up a new filing window for those frequencies (maybe even use a two or three of them for a new LPAM service perhaps?) at this point in time.
