Spanish on 990 in Florida?

Hello. I lurk here often but haven't posted in a long time. With the sad state of current radio this DX board is about the only one interesting to me anymore.

Was in Daytona Beach, Florida recently and was hearing Spanish on 990 very clearly each night. My Grundig was pointed toward Orlando but 990 in Orlando is supposed to be Radio Disney. The 990 down in Miami used to be Spanish but I believe they are Disney now too.

Any ideas? Does 990 Orlando broadcast Spanish at night since there would probably be few young kids listening? Though it powers down at night, it does appear that 990 Orlando shoots a lobe east at night with Daytona being just outside the northern fringe of the lobe.

There is a station in Santiago, Dominican Republic on 990khz listed in the WRTH at 5KW, but I don't know if it is directional at night. Also a .91KW ND station in Puerto Rico, and several 1KW stations listed for Cuba. There is a 50KW ND station listed in Grenada, but they speak english in Grenada.

Someone down in FL will probably know.

990 isn't what it used to be. When I first heard 990 in the mid 80s, it was a top 40 station that I remember put in a good signal around the critical hours. Now, I can't hear a thing because of WFLA's IBOC noise. At night, it's a weak signal of some Spanish speaking station.

Eliminating the Orlando station, as it is fulltime Disney (there is little Spanish language seeking audience left on AM in Orlando), the remaining stations are nearly all possible.

PR on 990 is all news / talk. There are no directionals in the Dominican Republic, but that station is seldom heard and may in fact only be 1 kw. Cuba is an option, but several monitor lists show nothing on 990... the other big signal is 10 kw YVRT in Caracas, fairly widely heard. Remember, Cuba changes powers and frequencies and transmitters with some abandon, so anything is possible.

I'm home right now and just picked up my Walkman to hear what is on 990. I'm getting a strong Spanish station when I face the radio to the SW/NE or SSW/NNE.

990 is one of my favorite DX frequencies.

I didn't mention SA stations because the person was over on the east side of FL.

I'm wondering if Caracas isn't running higher power or maybe it is a Central American station.

Can you record it and get a translation, gar fla?

If the reception was in early evening hours, XET in Mexico is a likely possibility. The trend in Central America is to move to FM, and many existing stations ahve reduced power.
