Spanish Pirate in New Britain?

Through much of Saturday night/Sunday morning, I've been getting an annoying pirate in the south end of New Britain. It's Spanish and it sounds like a religous broadcaster. It's on 87.9 FM, in stereo with a noticable hum at times in the background (and louder than it needs to be). Worse yet, it's all but wiping out WESU-FM 88.1 from Middletown, which I've never had trouble with here before. ???

Just to update, this "station" is still there, now sounding WAY too overmodulated. It's also interfering with the audio of VHF channel 6 on my Sony Walkman too. (Yes, I am aware of the whole 82-88 MHz thing with channel 6 audio.)

Spanish Pirate in New Britain? How do you say, "Arrrrr, shiver me timbers" in Spanish? ;D

I noticed this recently too, but had yet to mention it here. I think someone needs to let WESU know what's up. I believe current e-mail contacts and phone contacts are current, but there's not much time left to this semester and as it stands most of the board is possibly cramming and reading and whatnot, and it's all going to change very soon.

Ben Michael, the station manager might be one of the few people who might be able to respond in this area, or Kit Kociello, who is one of the station TD's. Both have contact info on the website at http://www.wesufm.org

Personally, as many of you know, I don't have a problem with pirate radio if it's done right, meaning clean audio, no adjacent splash and so on. So I actually do have a problem if some pirate plunks down without any thought of who they might cause problems with legit signals.

Just to update here: Here are my attempts at getting a couple pictures of the offending transmitter. It sits atop a building on 670 Arch Street in New Britain.

rapking, this one ain't Urban AC either. Keep listening to Touch 106.1 till that gets shut down!

The antenna looks like a 5/8 wave.
Now that you know where the antenna is, try to take it down or put metal objects around it. The transmitter will then go poof, and you'll be able to get WESU again.

If the pirate owner simply rented space in that building, try to notify the building manager about the illegal transmitter on the roof. He might not even know there is a pirate station in his very own building.

I'm not up to speed on the stuff like 5/8 wave. All I do know is that they have a conventional TV or radio antenna next to that transmitter. I had to be careful in taking the pics where I did, so it wouldn't be so obvious as to what I was doing. For what it's worth, I sent the same two pics in an e-mail to WESU-FM 88.1 and filled out any info I could on a form to the FCC's website. Now if I read WESU's coverage map correctly, much of Kensington (Berlin) and New Britain's south end are within that green circle, which I would assume is their city grade contour. Here's the link for that map:

I used to know someone who used to live in that building, I'm going to have to drive by there sometime soon and check out how bad it makes reception for WESU (maybe record the noise it causes to 88.1).

I've mentioned before that I have no problem with pirates (especially after being associated with one in the past, one that I could allow to go back on the air now that I fixed the output to legal specs, but they just don't want to bother now), but that's as long as the pirate dosen't just plop down wherever they feel like without consideration for adjacents or harmonics, ect. Do that, and you're just asking for trouble.

I wonder what would happen if I knocked on a door and politely asked if they needed some help doing things right (like fixing that horrid audio and doing a frequency search and putting a squelch on the output level of that transmitter).

I wonder if anyone has tracked down that 90.9 pirate yet?

Yes, it's the building which housed Willow Brook Pharmacy for many years. The late Al Gentile (of WRCQ-AM 910 fame) even had an office in there once too. Although the building says "670" above a flight of stairs, I can't prove that's where it's coming from. However, there IS a ground-level "church" there, so I'm now 99.9% certain they arer the ones responsible for this.

I have a radio with an rf gain, same one I used to use to track troublesome CB'ers back in the day, I can figure out if this is the place (hmm, would the pharmacy have ever needed a radio system for delivery vehicles? I doubt it but one never knows). I won't take action though, you've already done what can be done within the law because the old "pin in the coax" thing really might have been fun to brag about on the CB in those little squabbles they used to have in the 70's, but that kinda thing can lead to lots more hot water than it's worth. I like the contact the landloard idea, maybe make it sound like some kind of authority figure is on the line.
