Spanish Sports on 710 u/ WOR

In some fashion last night I wound up listening to WOR's Dr Joy Browne; me initiated into that realm by her terrific voice. (As a DXer I picture her as a 29-year old, 5'7 brunette in a hammock who looks like Merilee Rush, but that's decidely another topic).

Bothering WOR was this Spanish station with a game or competition going on. I get the idea that it might be an old logging -- Radio Super from Colombia -- but of course, there was no ID.

Meanwhile, it sounded as though the announcer was on a reverb-rife PA system going throughout the entire arena. There'd be the occasional bugle-charge sounder to get the crowd's blood up. He mentioned 'la hora' many times, but the time checks spanned at least 20 minutes, so it didn't hit me as the clock winding down and being crucial. I only caught one score (I think it was a score, and a partial score at that) -- 'quatro'.

I was reminded of the Happy Days episode where Richie Cunningham is at the foul line and the play-by-play guy is being heard through the whole building ... and after a few times when the announcer is saying 'He bounces the ball once ... He bounces it again' .... the crowd looks up at the booth impatiently, telling him to shut up. (If you never caught the episode : The closing line is one of the better gags you'll view).

Can anyone tell me what kind of sporting event I was hearing on the Spanish station? A bullfight? Winter baseball? Jai-alai? Cricket? An auto race?

And, oh yeah, maybe what the station was?

Hya Brent and thanks! I don't know if Miami is the one, though.

Back when they were WGBS, they were a nearly impossible catch here in the NE. WOR had to be off ; the Aurora had to be bright enough to wake up the birds, and WLW had to be reasonably silent on 700 in order for the faint, directional plea from WGBS to be identified.
The Spanish station under WOR (and on some nights OVER WOR) is too steady, too often, to be considered a mere matter of WAQI having forgotten to throw the switch every time I've tuned in 710. Whatever station it is must have an incredible nighttime coverage to the north. I mean, XEX and XERF were never this loud. The other logical suspect is Cuba -- they never identify there either -- but I haven't seen a 710 station from there listed anywhere as a 'pest'.

I tried //ing Radio Super* from the web last night to see if it was they, but the website was fooey and didn't send any audio. If I'm up again later and resonably sober, I'll give them another shot.

* (I was on the Superadio ; pardon any confusion, hi)

Back when I lived in PA, I would hear it too - especially during the winter months. Always sounded like a game going on though I think it's more of a political rally. My guess is that it's Cuban. Whatever it is, it's strong and would have enough muscle to outdo WOR less than 100 miles from its tx location!

Hya Burn,

A Cuba radio station list I found lists two stations on 710. One is 150,000 cigars and one is 10,000 watts. Both are listed as Radio Rebelde. Perhaps the reverb I heard was a mix of the two signals .....

Where did you get a Cuban station list? Off topic, a spanish station has been wiping out the big 750 in Atlanta here in north Alabama, any ideas on that one?

Rowen & Maritn's Laugh In was joking about the Voice Of Cuba on their TV show back in 1969. After the program, I
dialed around till I found it on 640 KHz. It was my first DX. I learned if I nulled Cuba out, I could hear KFI from LA
at around midnight.

I have seen Cuban television twice on channel 6 here in Indiana.

I remember when the Cubans were relaying Radio Moscow on 600 KHz with high power. The Cuban AM stations once
operated with much more wattage than they do now.

That one is 'Caracas 750' from Caracas, Venezuela which, if I'm not mistaken, broadcasts at 100,000 watts. I used to hear it under WSB from time to time when I lived in PA and knew what it was from my many visits to the land of beautiful women and Hugo Chavez.

Listings of AM, FM and TV stations in Venezuela can be found here: http://www.conatel.gov.ve/prestadores_de_servicios.asp
