WSPG-AM moves to all sports

JASON GILMER, Spartanburg Herald-Journal
Published January 31, 2006

Sports have become more prominent on 1400 AM in the past year.

Now it will become the staple of the local station.

Beginning Monday, WSPG-AM will become ESPN1400. The station is currently a news and sports talk station.

Along with ESPN's programming, the station will continue to broadcast the Atlanta Braves, Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Bobcats, Wofford sports and Spartanburg High School football.

"I think Spartanburg is a great sports town and we need an all-sports station," said Matt Smith, the station's sports director.

The station is looking to mix local radio programming with ESPN's stable of shows.

"Open Mic Daily," with Smith, Mark Hauser, Dick Cox and Tony Allison, will move from a two-hour daily show to three hours. Smith called this show the station's flagship show.

The addition of more sports programming has been in owner Matt Fulmer's mind for 18 months.

"I was watching the ratings and you can pinpoint it by the hour," Fulmer said. "We have three to five times more listeners during our sporting shows than any other."

Weekend morning programing will stay the same, Fulmer said, with religious programming on Sunday morning and local talk shows on Saturday morning.

"We understand that we need to service the community," Smith said.

"I think it will be a real win for everyone," Fulmer said.
