Speak English on New Orleans radio?

Is their a law against being educated and speaking English on New Orleans radio? Where did WWL get off believing that they should have Spud, Hebert, Big Chief, Kenny "AH, um, you know" Wilkerson representing New Orleanians? Friends that come into town can't believe how dumb these people sound. I have lived here all my life and have rarely encountered people who speak the way these individuals do. Also, how many people who work in radio were actually educated to work in the media? I would be willing to bet that 95% of all New Orleans radio personailites never graduated from college in the field of communications. In fact, I would be shocked if they even went to college. It doesn't matter what the other stations on AM put on because unfortunately only one station counts and that is WWL. How can the program director and GM keep their job? I hope WRNO puts together a kick A** lineup. No ratings book until February so RNO has time to get their programming in order.

You are 100% right about the WWL lineup. What a shame that a once great station has these clowns on air. I think very few of the on air talent in New Orleans have even been to college. I was told a long time ago that Johnson, who does the voices on the W&J show has only been through high school. Those guys love to talk about how brilliant they are, but they massacre the English language on the air and constantly mispronounce words.Kat is someone I couldn't listen to because one of my pet peeves is when a moron says "anyways" instead of anyway. I agree with you that the pd and gm of Entercom should be canned, the same for the management at Clear Channel--long overdue. It's ashame that CC killed WRNO, but it's not like any of the air talent they have now are any good. :p

I disagree. We are not Chicago, or Des Moines, or anywhere else in the Midwest... we are a colloquial place rich in accents.Do you Think Bobby H, Spud, Deke, etc. are stupid? All you have to do is listen to them for a period of time to know that they are not. They know their sports.Bobby SOUNDS like he’s from Cutoff, newsflash for those “I want everyone to sound like they’re from the Midwest” snobs out there… He is!Deke SOUNDS like he’s from North Tangipahoa… everyone who lives up there sounds the same… Hokie SOUNDS like he’s from the Baker area… heads up, snobs… he is!Gerry V SOUNDS like he’s from the Northeast… and that’s fine too.BTW, not that it matters, but the 3 most “colloquial” of those went to and graduated from college, Bobby H, Hokie G, and Deke.As far as WRNO going talk… I wouldn’t want to be answering the phones the week they kill “The Rock Of New Orleans.”

Then what would we call Spud ? ;DHe could sound as Midwestern as he wants, but chooses a new Orleans style accent.. IMO probably to make listeners accept him a little more...Remember it has been said, NOLA ain't nothing like anywhere's else.I mean look at local news... Most markets of NOLA's size has people trying to make the big time going from town to town... We do have that, but IMO we have a lot of locals in the news more than other locals, and those who come usually wind up staying about 5-10 years longer than they expected.RFLA

Just to sound off on the "he didn't go to college" bit --I am from New Orleans. I did not go to college. I do not sound like a moron. I have been a successful radio and television news anchor and personality for 10+ years. Please do not generalize. Just because one does not go to college, that does not mean they are not educated or well spoken. -Blaine Stewart WRBL-TV Columbus, GA
