speaker help

We have a bunch of Mackie HR824 powered monitors in our studios. The operators occasionally manage to bottom the voice coils in the woofers, which writes them off. Till recently, we got replacements from Mackie for them. Suddenly, Mackie has nio more. I'm told the original vendor - Vifa - either closed or ceased producing the model. Neither Madisound or Speaker City have been able to suggest a replacement. These toys are 220mm (8 inch) with a reasonbly good sized magnet, 1 1/2" voice coil, 4 Ohm drivers. Anyone have a suggestion as to what might work? I'm not too concerned about specific resonance, etc, because I can replace them in pairs to keep the monitors identical. I just can't find anything which meets the spec, particularly 4 Ohm. They're powered monitors, so I can't use an 8 Ohm. Ideas? ANYbody? Grandma???

thanks!!

You need to speak to a specialized speaker repair/design shop. You can't just match driver size and resistance, it won't work (sound as good)... The enclosure has been specifically designed for the particular Thiele/Small parameters of the particular driver, as is the crossover, compensations, etc.

Btw, on all radio stations I worked for we've limited the maximum volume of the studio monitors to a fairly loud (you know the DJs...) but safe levels. Safe hearing loss wise and speaker overload wise.

But to be honest Mackies, although sounding very transparent, strike me as a bit of a sensitive recording speakers, rather than a quality robust monitors for broadcast such as Genelecs or JBLs or Adams etc...

Speakerman - As I noted, Madisound didn't have anything. Larry sent me to Speaker City, they also had nairn.
Oldies - Thanks. I'mn gonna try a couple from the second one you suggested. First one is out of stock, no idea when, etc. Thanks.
Goran -
I want the two boxes to match. When I have operators who kill them by bottoming them, that they do not exactly match what came originally is moot - as I noted. In this service, had I built the place, I would likely have hung LaScalas and used outboard amps. I didn't build it.

Thanks, guys!!!

LaScalas were used at WVLK Lexington, KY. They had a set for two production rooms, a talk studio and AM Control room. They were mounted in each room flush with the drop ceiling grid.

Sorry, I did not read through your post carefully.

Here are some good people that do expert re-coning. http://speakerex.com/ If they can't fix them they might be able to aim you in the right direction.
