The 12+ numbers for Buffalo can be deceptive, William. WBEN, the sole commercial AM news-talk station gets the bulk of the AM 12+ numbers. Additionally, the Entercom cluster scores a large chunk of AM listeners because it owns four of the most powerful AM stations in Buffalo; WBEN, WGR, WWWS and WWKB. Rather amusing to label WWWS as "powerful" given its 1kW signal, however it often draws better 12+ numbers than sister station, 50kW KB. I've often wondered why Entercom didn't put Solid Gold Soul on 1520 and put Progressive Talk on 1400. Oh well, brighter minds than mine call the shots at 500 Corporate Parkway.
CHWO is an anomaly that gets a lot of attention on this board because the Canadian station is the only Adult Standards format available to Western New York. WECK, WXRL, WLVL, WHLD and WBBF often trail the AM pack, although WECK has had its share of very strong books when it was Adult Standards.
As to the post from a new-to-the-board poster regarding young people leaving Western New York, there's some truth to this. Young people can't wait to move to Florida, where the Palmetto bugs often are larger than small dogs; to Georgia and the Carolinas, where water is rationed and to California, where at your house can shift to another Zip Code overnight, that is if it's still standing or hasn't burned. After the layoffs begin or they get their fill of people talking in another dialect (NASCAR, Valley Dude, Texan, etc.) some ex-patriots want to move back to Western New York, where the winters blow but the summers are extraordinary.
There's plenty of clean, fresh water and wind power here... and more sunshine in the summer than most cities in North America. Within the next 20 to 50 years, Western New York may become the Mecca for green power and ecologically sound living which will be big business. We can only hope the politicians don't #@*% it up. Hope springs eternal.
WNY gets a bad rap. There are many things I don't like about it, but being a realist and somebody who's chosen to live here, I know it has untapped and unlimited potential. The grass may be greener on the other side of the street but it's more than likely due to a leak in the septic tank.
