SPEAKING OF BAD PROCESSING ==> 1460 WBNS!

What happened to WBNS? They used to sound so good back in the 1970's and I'm not talking about music format! In fact they traditionally always sounded better than WTVN!!!

But I was flipping through the radio channels between Rush and Spielman. Spielman sounds so flat, and dirty and DEAD! Rush, on the other hand, sounds bright, has the right amount of reverb. It really brings his show to life.

I'm wondering if part of the reason WBNS-AM's ratings are so bad is the "elevator music" quality to their sound!

Add some reverb, for God's sakes!

Ok, total idiot question here but why is reverb added to Talk format or better question, when is it too much? That is something I noticed RIGHT AWAY on Talk FM during Mark the Shark's show and it sounded like he was broadcasting from an empty basement there was so much reverb. So in my untrained perception, it sounded very amateurish like it was done without a studio. Certainly that's not the effect they were hoping for. I still notice it from time to time but not nearly as much as when the show first debuted.

WBNS has to be having technical problems today because I noticed the syndicated shows also sound real muddy. I think Rush has just the right amount of reverb ... kind of like a Top 40 station in the 1960's!

It actually changed years ago when they changed from a tube to a solid state transmitter.

Actually, the latest ratings show 1460 The Fan holding its own--12th in the market and second among stations with talk formats. And its numbers got a slight boost while WTVN showed the worst numbers in a year and a half.

No other station with a talk format made the top 20. And I won't say what station was DEAD LAST, but Del was right on the money on his comments about that particular frequency.

Glenn Beck is probably savoring the moment right now.

This is a little off the topic, but back in the 80s to the mid 90s WGTZ/Z-93 Dayton had pretty cool reverb...Just the right amount. Will Bevis(Huh huh)was a brilliant engineer, and the mastermind behind Z-93's "Big Sound" back in the glory days of that frequency...If you have any old tapes of Z(I have quite a few)go back and check it out. 8)

Oh yes, I'm sure Glenn's just thrilled with the familiar kind of bottom-of-the-barrel trend WTDA had...the kind it will probably continue to get with that signal regardless of whether the format is adult hits, talk/sports, or singing dogs.  Of course, all it takes is something as significant as an ant crawling across the floor to get that guy ranting, raving, whining and bellowing.

It's still kind of funny that, in the latest trend,  the two new talk stations are (1) in the cellar - WTDA, and (2) beneath the cellar - WYTS.  While we can't really tell if this says anything about longer-term revenue or ratings potential for TDA and YTS, I'd wager that it does.

Same with the old 92X. For that matter, maybe WTDA could also use a "Big Sound". Anyway, using the right amount of reverb is part of what makes Rush's show "sing", in my opinion

I know this is off-topic, but was watching ONN for a little bit today and think the same thing could be said about them. Part of the reason watching them is so dull is the sound. I think giving them a "Big Sound", as you put it, would add a little more of an excitement factor to their station.

Totally agree with everything you say.

My Glenn Beck comment has some sarcasm behind it (shocker). Bruce Collins wanted Beck to be the centerpiece of WYTS, and Beck's reaction...taking a running gag from Stephanie Miller..."Computer says no."

Sean, thank goodness you know what Bruce Collins wants because it is obvious that he has no clue
about what he wants...or makes sense...or wins....or what Columbus audiences are about or...I'm sorry, was I typing out loud again?

My comments were based on what he said in announcing the new schedule on WTVN on December 22, plus the subsequent Dispatch articles on Beck.

Having said that, I couldn't agree with you more. :D
