Speaking of Bobby Knight

Picked up WAFN FM's (92.7 Arab, Alabama) stream today and noticed that Bobby is on there from 2-7. I didn't know he was voice tracking anywhere. Anyone know if he's doing this elsewhere?

They'd have to be- mediocre jock doing the same-old/same-old Oldies lines.
Real exciting.

Good Lord Oldiescat, you've really got it in for this guy, what did he do, sleep with your wife or something?

Cumulus is doing a better job with the Oldies format than South Central did. They've updated the music just a bit and the air talent seems a bit more free than they were.

Bobby Knight has always done solid work since he came to Nashville and has several times been a finalist for Achievement in Radio (AIR) Awards. If he's making some extra bucks working for Michael St. John, more power to him. Most of us would also jump at that given the chance.

There are some irritating and in some cases, rather awful, air personalities on Nashville radio, but Bobby Knight isn't among them.

Mediocre? What? If this market had more funny, talented people on the air like Bobby, our market wouldn't be so dull.

Bobby! Stop posting and get back to work!

Not at all. Everytime I've ever heard the guy, it's just the same old-same old oldies jock no-big-deal radio. Very boiler-plate, very blah blah blah. The same type of oldies jock blabbing about the same old "good time-great oldies" crap that's been killing Oldies radio for the past couple of years. Some people (and maybe it IS him) post here like he's the second coming of oldies jocks and he's about as average as you can get.

(gee, what did YOU do- sleep with HIM?) LOL

OK what IS he supposed to talk about??

yawnfest

Well, for starters, things his listeners are actually interested in. This song hit #4 on the charts, here's your Top 5 at 5 Countdown, music trivia, good times/great oldies, on this day in rock & roll history some group's drummer died, the backwards 45 contest- blah, blah, blah.

It's all ad-nauseum. We all know C.C.R. never had a #1 song but hit #2 five times. SO WHAT? It's just the same DJ drivel. Nothing topical, nothing relevant, nothing entertaining. "Hi, I'm Bobby Knight--AGAIN!!!".

Y-a-w-n.

(and, it's not just him- it's hundreds of oldies jocks all over America. He just happens to be no better than any of the rest who mail it in every day)

Re: yawnfest

Dayum! Didn't mean to rattle Oldiescat. All I wanted to know is if Bobby was doing this elsewhere as well. From what I heard on the Alabama station, he was pretty bland. It was fairly easy to tell that he was nowhere near the station during the show. But, I'll take up for Bobby's work here. I don't think it's a yawnfest at all. I like the older stuff myself, but I can deal with Cumulus expanding the timeline. I agree that Cumulus is doing a better job in the format, but I do wish they would go a bit deeper catalog on their playlist - if only on the weekends. I haven't been down to Jackson, TN in some time, but KOOL 103 used to play a bunch of really good "I haven't heard that in a long time songs."

Who is he supposed to say he is--Bea Arthur? He's Bobby Knight.

I listen to Oldies 97.1 during the afternoon commute and I like it when Bobby provides a little info about the songs. I enjoy learning something about the music--and I am confident his regular listeners do as well.

Re: yawnfest

Hi Bobby Knight here, first off I'd like to thank those who
said nice things about me on this thread..

As for the others, let me set you straight on a few things..

"This song hit #4 on the charts, here's your
> Top 5 at 5 Countdown, music trivia, good times/great oldies,"

Just responding to research, at 96.3 and 97.1, the 5 at 5 has been one of the more popular features on the radio station, and is usually tied into promotional giveaways. As far as "Goodtimes & Great Oldies", It's the station's positioning statement, fact is if the positioning statement were "I'm lovin' it"
or even "Bite me" I'd probably be hitting that hard too..

> on this day in rock & roll history some group's drummer
> died, the backwards 45 contest- blah, blah, blah.
>
Never in my 14+ years in this market have I ever mentioned some groups drummer dying on this day in rock & roll history, and I have never done a backwards 45 contest. Ever.
>
"Nothing topical, nothing relevant, nothing
> entertaining."
>
Evidently you've never listened at 4:50pm..

Hey, I realize not everyone is gonna like what I do, but Cumulus seems to be happy, and (with the exception of a bad December) the listners seem to be happy as well. Thanks for Listening Oldiescat!

Nobody rattled anybody. I was asked- I answered honestly. Geez.

Nothing personal, Bobby. Like I said, the whole oldies format "good times- great oldies" drone has been going on for 2 decades and most Oldies jocks just "deliver" the lines but the fun and genuine sizzle rarely blast out of the speakers. That's certainly not your fault but your station (and, subsequently, your show) fall into a very large group of OK, not great but not bad radio stations. And, if that's the goal, fine. It just isn't working in most cases and won't be enough to move forward with the growing technology and increasing choices. Being "good" won't be good enough (and actually never really has been). The fact that Cumulus is happy with it doesn't exactly make most in radio drop to their knees in awe, either.

I also find it amusing that now "according to research" is the fallback when usually "the research" (or over-use of it) is normally a scapegoat. If your bosses are "researching" benchmark features, they're wasting their money. Research should be used on much more big-picture things, like music, position, strategy and marketing. Having the world's greatest features won't do any station a bit of good if they're off the mark with the music, positioning, etc.

Again, nothing personal. Just honest observations. I'm sure you're a nice guy and a great American. I'm just rarely impressed with "OK" radio.

And I'm sure the fact that you're not impressed does'nt keep him awake at night
either

Never said it should.

Can't you guys in Nashville take a little honest opinion? It's supposed to be the Music City- it's OK to think outside the box, fellas.

Yes, it is the Music City. And Bobby Knight knows the music. If I were playing a musical trivia game, I'd want him on my team.

Bobby does quite a bit of prep before he goes on the air every day. He does good work, and we in the Nashville media community are glad he is one of our own.

And, THAT, ladies and gentlemen, from the Bobby Knight Fan Club President
(or Bobby's best friend, wife/partner, fave co-worker or perhaps even Bobby himself incognito).
