I'm showing my age but...

Al Corley was the orginial Steven on Dynasty. Steven was gay and from what I understand Corley wanted Steven to be the model gay man for all gay men in America. However, once the show hired Collins, Corley had a fit to jealousy over not being the star of the show. To settle him down, the writers had Steven end up in an oil rig explosion and POOF! Jack Coleman assumed the role of Alexis' son.

I guess there wasn't hard feelings as Corley did reprise the role of Steven(which erased the plastic surgery) in the 1991 reunion movie that tied up almost all of the loose ends from the show's 1989 finale.
