Speaking of Oldies 103.3...

I've had the pleasure of being back in the area for a family visit this weekend, for the first time in a few months, and must say that Oldies 103.3 sounds A LOT better than it did the last time I was here. The new jingle package (which is probably new only to me), combined with a musical refocus toward actual oldies - versus their formerly heavy reliance on older AC staples - has really made them much more enjoyable to listen to from my point of view. The playlist seems to have been widened too, which is something that was long overdue.

Also, their weekend specialty shows were a great listen including Barry Scott's Lost 45s (a real treat) and those AT40 countdowns from the 70s. All good stuff. I hope that they stay with this direction when the get done with this impeding Christmas...ahem "holiday"...music that will soon take over.

I must say that this is the first time in years that I've listened to WODS this much. Kudos to their programming department; I like the changes.

Yep. Dale Dorman is a great asset to their Saturday programming (it's like cartoons again on Channel 56), with Patrick Callahan's most excellent Top 20 countdown preceeding that. Patrick is an excellent host, there's something about his delivery that's most sincere even on Sunday afternoons. Dale is happier, obviously and sounds like he did 30-35 years ago and he's funny again-I think his early morning weekly stint just was not him. Also the AT40 tapes are great-it's like driving along and you've hit a time warp back to the 70's. All that's missing are the Bradlee's ads. And Barry Scott's L45's show is one of the best things on radio. I agree, their weekend is much much better. And I think JJ wright is better in the afternoons. I tuned back just to hear him because he's good. Karen Blake chit-chatted(which she does quite well)a bit in the afternoons and it became too much of a "girl's advice" show, in my opinion, and now she does that par excellence in the mornings where it seems a better fit.

All changes for the better, tho it seemed it took some time to work it all out.

I agree, Karen's better in the morning and I don't think she needs Lobel or anyone else co-hosting with her, the morning show has been better since Lobel hasn't been on, notice that the guest host notices have been dropped on air recently. I wonder if he's coming back after he gets over his recovery from back surgery.

I noticed that too. Haven't heard the announcer announcements and I don't think I've heard anyone mention his name on-air either. Karen kept him on via phone during the Sox run through the ALDS and the ALCS and possibly a Patriots game but then, poof, he was gone. It might be that he's in therapy first thing and all day every day so he doesn't have time but it's better without him. Problem I find with her show is......each hour's bits are recycled to the next hour. She does the same "entertainment" reports every hour. She has to have a "theme" every morning so listeners can call in. Can't you just play music and have no theme or entertainment reports once in a while?

Other than that, it's ok and I like that June is interacting with her. She was barely visible with Lobel there.

The icing on the cake would be Mauzy coming back to traffic reports (as well as a regular weekend show).

Listener interactivity helps ratings for that type of morning show. Just playing music isn't as effective. It's a highly competitive slot. As for repetition, TSL in morning drive is short. Typically, people throw it on for a few minutes at a time while getting ready for or commuting to work. Most people don't listen to more than an hour of a morning show at a time, so most people wouldn't hear any bits repeated.

Agreed. And this is not a new thing. In the mid 70s I was working on the west coast. The 8am hour of our morning show was an almost verbatim repeat of the 6am hour, only the songs & commercials were different. All the bits, etc. were recycled. Likewise for 7am & 9am. This was the top-rated morning show in the market at the time.
