Speaking of the national anthem

Really was refreshing yesterday at the beginning of NBC and VS. coverage of hockey games to hear the national anthem sung without words being missed or one syllable words becoming 4 syllable words.

On the other hand, a veteran was shown singing the anthem at some event attended by veterans and broadcast on "America's Funniest Home Videos". I'm sure given his status he meant no disrespect, but he messed up the words far worse than Christina Aguilera and couldn't stay on pitch.

I can forgive someone for flubbing the lyrics, that happens to everyone from time to time, but what Christian Agulerra and others like her do is premeditated. The Star Spangled banner is NOT a pop, blues, soul, gospel or torch song. When singing an anthem, sacred hymn and most traditional music it is considered not only inappropriate to showboat and add runs, vocal gymnastics and other junk to the song, but it is incrediblly bad taste. Shame on her.

Being a hockey game, maybe it wasn't the US anthem! ;)

They nailed "Oh Canada" as well. As yet, haven't heard anyone make "Oh Canada" an 8 minute blues song. In many cases some of the song is done in both French and English. Some who sing our anthem have great difficulty with one language.

I still can't for the life of me figure out why so many American singers, especially the women think they have to sing like they are either trying to pass a large stool, or have an orgasm. or both at the same time. It sounds like crap, its tacky and the NFL and other sports organizations should crack down on this habit, or either bring back a marching band or classically trained singer/musician to do the anthem. No more bad pop singers. yuck.

May I inquire what the group thinks about the rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at last year's Kentucky Derby by Rascal Flatts? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teWp534_bjM

I ask mostly because I don't think I've heard it done by another group larger than one and smaller than twenty.

I don't recall that. I thought all they ever did at that race was "My Old Kentucky Home". And I've never heard anything but dignified performances of that.

Amen flytrap! That's the "American Idol syndrome" and your description is kind. To me, it sounds like they're trying to pass a softball-sized kidney stone. Frank is absolutely right: on any given evening you'll hear the national anthems of the USA and Canada sung with far more skill and reverence than what we were *treated* (subjected) to at the Super Bowl. Probably because those singers give a damn about being respectful and sounding good.

I also agree with flytrap. I rather hear an instrumental version of the U.S. national anthem performed by a military band instead. Or if not by a military band, at least played in that style. I cringe when I hear someone trying to sing the national anthem. Their singing never sounds right to me.

Ouch. So who has the obligatory Roseanne clip now? :-\

Having sung since I was old enough to know what singing was, I am also put off by the emphasis of style over the fundamentals of pitch, tone and enunciation. Pop singers are the worst for it, and it's not a new phenomenon. Fortunately, there are some sports teams, such as the Phoenix Suns, who will reject your audition if you put too much style into the anthem, according to a friend of mine who sung before a Suns game.

As I listened to Aguilera's version, I wasn't the least bit surprised that she flubbed the lyrics - that wasn't where her concentration was focused.

BTW - didn't think much of the Rascal Flatts version either. And that has nothing to do with the fellow who kept his hands in his pockets during the entire performance.

Pop singers have been adding a Pop touch ever since Whitney Houston sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl back in 1991. Anyone here remember THAT?

Cheers :D
